My respects. Can you dj in 3D with Virtual Dj...Im going to buy a 3D projector and some 10 foot 3D Projection screens. I have VDJ and Serato. If I have the proper equiptment can you still dj with 3D videos or do you need a plugin or something? If so, is there a 3D plugin for dj software?
Posted Fri 03 Feb 12 @ 3:59 am
no this would not be possible, you would need a plugin that can communicate transport information to your 3d player, the way 3d works is the 3d software has two images representing the left and right eye, then mashes the two images seperately at a rate of 120hz (your standard tv uses 50 or 60hz depending on where you are in the world), then to seperate the images you need special glasses that flash the images at a rate of 60hz each one after the other, if you want to dj you should upgrade to 2 identicle projectors and use circular wave lenses like RealD uses that way you wont have to trust the crowd with $100 shutter glasses, only $2 static lense glasses.... but it still wouldn't be possible to use vdj to do it...

Thank you for your reply. I understand what you are saying about how 3D works. So what do I need to use or research to find a software program where I can video dj in 3D and have it run through the normal clubs tvs (eventhough they arnt 3D) but through a 3D projector onto the 3D projection screens behind me too. I was going to purchase 1000 ($2 3D glasses) for each event. I wanted to start out with 5/6 events djing in 3D before I decide if I want to pursue this at the moment knowing 3D djing is the future but is still in its early stages. If you could steer me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. I have a respectable budget to do this so Im not just talking out my ass. I just want to find out what its going to take for me to do this so I can get it done.

i think you would need to convince scott sbdj that it is worthwhile, he has a plugin that sends information to a seperate dmx lighting plugin called freestyler, and there is always rewire, if you can find a vj software that uses 3d that's probably your best bet, you could also look into mspinky which is an open platform timecode system to use as a plugin for the vj software, unfortunately though I don't think vdj would support anything like this anytime soon...
good luck with it though, it would be great to know if you get it working

thanks. yes. stay in touch with me man. ****** or follow me on twitter if you have one ******* I think I found what I need. I am going to call the companies in the later on to get some more info. At first I was going to do 3D laser animations (where the laser create a image in the sky as if it was floating on top of the crowd) but with the 50k price tag for the laser unit I am looking at other options before I make a decision and make my sponsors and label fork over the money and being able to put on a all out 3D show with hologram LED floors I think will be just as good and LESS expensive than just 3d laser animations. I have a pretty big tour coming up starting in May with my label. Im a electro/house producer and dj. Signed to a label under Sony Latino in Puerto Rico. Been djing just audio and my own production but now its time to step my game up. I have my first international single releasing in March so its almost game time now. anyways. hit me up via email or twitter or something and ill definately let you know whats up. again. thanks for everything. my respects boss.

well if you have that much cash to blow contact pangolin, they make an amazing flash player plugin built specifically for virtual dj, some tweeks may get what you are after, but their business specialty is lasers! Don could definately send you in the right direction, and maybe help you to achieve your goal.

P.S. you should also be very careful of how you impliment 3d into your performance as people will become mesmarized with the graphics and stop dancing, this you don't want IMO...
If you want something special that won't draw too much attention I suggest flexible led screens, for $10,000-$20,000 you could cover the back wall of any club you play, and you can program them with graphics, patterns, video etc..., best of all you could pack it down to a couple of trunks, not an entire truck like a portable floor and silver 3D projector screen would take to move...
the best thing though is that the visuals won't detract from the music and crowd will dance. As a former Rave junkie if the visuals are cool thats great, but the nights I had the most fun was dancing to the music... It was always my opinion that clubbing is so popuar because you shine the spotlight on the crowd and make them feel they are right in the action. It is wrong IMO to take that away from them if you are just djing, producers are a different story.
you should also look at video's of the last sub focus world tour, he had a simple led filled structure which he animated in all different patterns very effectively, an other great option http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/158697/VirtualDJ_Plugins/Perspective_transform.html this is being looked into...

You'll need to purchase VDJ first before you'll be able to put any of these suggestions into practise though.

Yes and so have a lot of other people including myself, but we have registered our purchase of this software which shows us as either le or pro version users, you appear to have forgotten to do this, even if you have been given the software as a freebie I would have thought you'd would want to do this.
When I'm on other software forums people know if I'm just a trial user or I've registered the software so everyone knows I'm indeed a legal user, I don't talk the talk... so why don't you register your version of vdj.
With the budget you are proposing I would have at least expected you to have a legal copy of the software that will be at the heart of your shows.

You can dj in 3d with VDJ! All you need to do is get your 3d content in side by side format. I have actually tried it and iit works. The only problem is the lack of 3d content.

how do you get the side by side images to 1 screen though? maybe a plugin could be created to send half the video window to one projector and the other half to a different one.... that would work if you just got a couple of the circular polarized lenses... throw scott a few thousand and im sure you would get it in no time...

The side by side image is like any other video image. VDJ just plays what is fed. magic is done by the 3d tv or projector. On a normal tv the video would look like a video that is two almost identical images side by side the 3d tv then processes this image and puts it into a format that will play in 3d with its 3d glasses. The tv does not care where the side by side video comes from it can be a computer a digital cable or fios box. There are a few side by side videos on the net and also if you have a dvr you can actually record 3d movies or content from 3d cable broadcast.

Synthet1c : Thanks for all the advice you gave me. I am have been looking into video mapping and the flexibale led screens you mentioned. In the next few weeks I should be able to give you a update on all that stuff.
Drzince:
Drzinc : I saw alot of different software brands saying you can convert normal videos to 3D. I agree with you about where the magic is done. Thats why I was looking into 3D projectors and 3D projection screens. I also was thinking about purchasing Resolume Arena 4 w/a midi controller to use and connect to a projector for visuals and dj software for the audio. Being able to pull of a successful 3D show still looking cheaper than building a custom mobile dj booth, etc for video mapping.
Getting this laser box I wanted (50k at 2000 a month : 2yr lease buy option) is pretty much out of the question especially when there are cheaper and more effective ways to wow an audience.
