Topic: Beatmatching house to other genres

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hi,

I am at a loss for this.
What I want to do, is beatmatch tracks which differ a lot in BPM. For example, I want a nice flow between a house song and 'Drop It Like It's Hot' from Snoop Dogg. And after I've done that, I want to know how to mix out of this track (92BPM) into a general house track (128).
These are not tracks on which you can simply hit the SYNC button, if you know what I mean.
How do I this? Is is something with loops? I am sure that you must develop a certain agility for this solution to work..

Another issue is switching from house to hardstyle (150BPM) in a relatively smooth way. I can hit a backspin on the house track but that doesn't sound smooth enough. You don't want people to worry about what you're doing to the music.
How can I do this? Loop a house song, change the pitch gradually?
Is there some sort of obvious solution to this which I, as a newbie, simply am not capable to see?

To those who wish to answer with 'nudge the damn thang': does not work for me. I find it hard to do in VDJ as my only tool is a laptop, and I can't get the hang of it.

Help would be greatly appreciated!

First of all, one should never, ever hit the SYNC button unless you are too drunk to mix (like me Saturday night hahahah)

Second there are a number of ways to doing this.

1) Loop and intro of the incoming song. Raise the BPM to match. After you faded it in, slowly lower the bpm and cut the loop.
2) Songs divisible by 2 mix well together. It will basically hit at every other beat. IE A 130PM song with mix well with 65BPM hip hop song.
3) If you have Ableton, you can make your own transitions, or a lot of record pools will have transitions of certain songs.

Hope that helps.

So the SYNC feature, included in modern controllers and CDJ's as well as in digital mixing software like VDJ or Serato, has no place for a deejay "unless you are too drunk to mix"? Hmmmm, interesting.

I'm soooo happy all manufactures have decided to ad a sync button in their equipment :D now I can get drunk every night and not think about DJ'ing :D.

Anyway I would not normally go the way you described. Going from house to hiphop to hardstyle can be confusing for the people on the dance floor. Anyway what can work is as said loop out and de/increase tempo. a delay or eco can also trick the mind of the dancers to think the next song is the same tempo. Also if the 2 tracks are the same key some times it is possible to blend the songs only by doing some EQ filtering.

You're never drunk as long as you can hold a blade of grass in your hand and not fall off the face of the Earth.

Well that's just pathetic. Anybody who thinks using the SYNC button is WRONG really should question their egoistic morals a little more.

I ONLY USE THE SYNC BUTTON, and there is nothing wrong about it. I use to mix vinyl the old fashion way and there is nothing wrong with technology helping me achieve the time saving (one would be surprised how fast one can mix out of a track) fluidity which is required on the spot. I understand old school Djs who swear by the fact that you must do it all by ear bla .bla ...blaaaaa

Fact is (for me) : I don't have time to beat match manually. It takes too long for what I've already become accustomed with the SYNC button. Doesn't matter what angle you look at it from, or what you want to label me as, but I sometimes play thru 4 tracks in 2 minutes or so, (sometimes even less) with such "speed (or at least it feels that way in the booth) that doing it manually would disable me from doing so. I mix a lot of TECH HOUSE by switching basses sporadically between decks and equalizing the rest. So I need to be able to SYNC on the sec.

(You are not your ability to beat match music manually -You are a DJ - Play music - Have Fun - Stop taking it so serious, you'll ruin it for yourself.)

I think it depends - if it's a fast transition (which I don't do) then I think the sync button is there for that reason - however if you're doing a 1 min transition, which is what I tend to do with my mixes as they sound more organic - then that is what the platters are there for!!!

@ DJ Arum,

I'm with you. I use manual beat match quiet a bit, but sometimes I like to use SYNC to. Many years ago a friend of mine who is a musician and music programmer told me that he likes to use SYNC because it gives him more resources/time to focus on elaborate remixes. I thought it was a good point.

also never use a laptop to dj and never use drops furthermore never use anything that couldn't have been done 100 years ago.

Anyone knows that in any job you're not "real" if you use tools. Use only your hands and never anything that might be automatic.

Sync Button is a new tool and more accurate, so there is nothing wrong if u want to use it, why all the controllers and software have this option???!!! Actually, all the music industry are using quantization and loops!!!

try using the sync on disco or funk or salsa.... never works 100%, that sync feature is mostly for house & dance so to speak, or computer generated beats in other words. and if you are using the sync button for that genre you have a long way to go....

the best "Sync" option is your ears... NOT VDJ, NOT SERATO, NOT THE BPM COUNTER ON THE SCREEN.... YOUR EARS!! YOU HAVE THEM FOR A REASON, USE THEM, JUST LIKE THOSE DJs BEFORE YOU...

Gezzus!!!

If you want to make it to the top, Your ears is youre best tool. Other djs look at what you do when you mix in big clubs and the word spreads. You dont want to be known for a Snyc DJ.

why would you bother listening to music to mix it when you can just look at the waveforms and prearrange the beat grid and press sync! its so much easier. get with the times you dinosaurs, and being a dj is more about image anyway, anyone can mix music together so it sounds good, but no one looks as good as me with spray on pants a wife beater with hair waxed up twiddling knobs and fisting the air!
