Topic: JBL PRX612 VS QSC K12 or PRX 635 or Passive speaker like JBL MRX line

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hi,
I have been doing lots of research and looking for a good pair of speakes.
In listening to JBL PRX 612 and QSC K12 active speaker, I like the JBL sound and presence.
But, Alot of people said the QSC is more reliable.
My main purpose for these speakers is for Karaoke in my apartment.
So I want the speakers to have clearity.
And, I'm not going to crank to maxium of course.
If I need, I want to set this up sometimes at my friends house for gig.
I know if I go with active speakers, then I can't change the Amp. section or have the flexibility to change Amp.
And, everything is configure for that speakers.
But, if I go with the passive speakers like JBL MRX, then I can change the Amp. if I need to.
I want to know what you guys think.
Thanks.

Go Active

612 only has one handle so I wouldn't buy it.
635 is too big, this is to be accompanied by 18" sub for front of house!

Which leaves the QSC, QSC has more inputs for configuration anyway.

K12's might be a little overkill for karaoke in an apartment, and the 635's definitely are. I use pair of K10's and they can fill a pretty decent size room. For gigs, most are 100 - 300 people, I pair them with QSC subs, but for just hanging out and listening to music the K10's put out a pretty decent amount of base when set to "deep" and the K12's would go even lower. The KW152's sound really good and will be able to handle most gigs.

The JBL have a passive heat sink while the QSC have fans to keep them cool so they may be a little more dependable.

Between the JBL Prx & The Qsc K12, I preffer the Jbls because They have more bass responce and they sound warm. I owned a Pair of QSC k12s and i sold them for the Jbls. I have the Prx 615m's. The Qscs sound great but, The Jbls sound louder and have more bass responce because of its wonden cabinet. The 15 inch model weighs 43 pounds and the 12 inch model weighs 34 pounds. They do have one handle but 43 pounds for the 15 inch & 34 pounds for the 12 inch model is Nothing. I dont call that heavy.

Got to remember this is a noob, not a pro, so ultimate performance isn't necessary.

Although the JBL 12 isn't the heavy I still wouldn't buy it with it only having one handle, I think it's tight, and I would feel as if I'm using a pair of stage monitors.

Personally I'd get some K8's for home use.

Hi,
Thanks guys for quick response and opinion.
I do have to agree to Caliente123 in my opionion JBL PRX615 sound warm and seems like the music is not at you if you stand in front of the speakers. Then, QSC when play music and you stand in front of it, the sound seems to be right as it sounds more aggressive. But, that is just matter of taste.
I do like the Amplifier section on the QSC, though.
I have read on JBL PRX series, that they have heat problems when play for long period of time.
But, What do you guys about these speakers for apartment or house? Do you thinks it is over kill for Karaoke.
Then again, I try my home system with 200 watt for karaoke and it sound sucks.
Thanks.

The First PRX series (512, 515, 518) speakers were the ones that gave problems, Not the new Prx612m, PRX 615m & etc. They made changes in the new series.

instead of paying alot of money for a a Qsc K12 or Jbl Prx etc, Check out this brand that is made by alto. I was looking for a 10 inch model but i only saw a 12 inch version.

+1
K8s all the way, I still think even for karaoke night in an apartment K8s are an over kill!
Back yard party K8s turned 1/4 way up (Cops called on me lol)
Inside my home I have a pair of Yamaha HS80S monitors, this gives me plenty of power inside the house....I have never used the K8s inside my place and if I did I would only use 1, no need for more than 1 inside an apartment but even that is an over kill I think.

When I used to live in a 900 ft sq apartment I had a pair of Yamaha HS50S monitors and I would only turn them up 1/4 of the way up and they would fill up the place with sound, you cold even hear them all the way to the back of the apartment. One time I had friends over and I turned them up halfway and the apartment's complex rent a cop came knocking at my door.

I would go with the QSC's , the K8's would be better for home use

I have just got back from suppling 2 out door pa set ups both using 4 K12's each and they have ran for 13 hours in 40 degrees (centigrade) with no problems what so ever.

Well the larger speakers give him something to grow into, he gets a place to store and use them and if he gets a party and he's on the third floor he gets a visit to a chiropractor.

I have a lower studio set up with 2 Yorkville Elite 160p's with two E200p 10" subs and in another room with my extra set of Yorkville NX 750's that I use just the way I described only with 3 steps to ground wheel level.

For what he needs immediately, VDJ with a line mixer and a home stereo system would work just fine, done that here also.

What I don't get is why he would spend $2k on speakers primarily for home use.

Thanks guys for your input.
To answer MP3jrick's point "What I don't get is why he would spend $2k on speakers primarily for home use. ". It is because homespeaker don't have the dynamic and clearity as Pro speakers do.
Karaoke on home speakers sounds dull, but Pro speaker sound live and clear.
I know spending $2k is alot, but I rather get something that I would happy with rather than getting some that I'm not happy with.
Again thanks for all you guys input to make my decision.

Hi guys,
I got a chance to go to Guitar Center last night when they not busy.
I audition JBL PRX 612, 615 and QSC K10, K12 and KW 153, and ALTO.
What I head is the the QSC K10, K12 in the high section is bright and clear, but lack of bass. I thought to myself after I got home, I should of make sure of the adjustment on the QSC. KW 153 is bright and clear with bass with powerful sound and dynamics.
JBL PRX 612, 615 high section is not as bright as QSC, but it is clear and had more bass than QSC K10, K12.
I also switch to the ALTO's, but didn't seem to have any dynamics, so I focus on the JBL and QSC.
While I listen to all these speaker I kept all speakers at same volume and no FX.

The "deep" setting on the QSC will make a big difference in the bass output. If you are looking for more bass than the K12 can put out in the deep setting for apartment Karaoke I have to ask - "is your landlord deaf?"

I had QSC K12s and K8s. After using them at many gigs I noticed that K8s sound much cleaner in mid and high range. So I sold K12s. Now I use 2 K8s for small gigs and add subs for bigger events.

Hi,
Just brought the JBL PRX 615 at GC yesturday.
I have a $200 discount if you brought over $999.
So, I got the speaker, stand, and cable which comes out to be $799 plus tax.
I have listen both again before I brought these speakers.
I let you guy know how it goes after I recieved these items.
Thanks alot for all your input.

The JBL prx615's are really good. When i had my Qsc k12s, they sounded good in detail but, i wanted more bass from a speaker top without bringing a subwoofer. Standing behind a QSC K12 while its loud, You will notice that the cabinet because its plastic, It has a slight rumble. The bass is putting alot of pressure on the Cabinet.

I own a pair of prx 615m and I have no complaints. It doesnt matter to me if it has one handle and its a plus that it has the wedge design incase you want to use them as monitors. I have the k12's and wasn't happy with them, I needed more bass.
