Topic: Ipod won't let me play music until synced

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

So I broke down and finally got an Ipod - mostly because I could use it as a back up on my Mixdeck. I hate Itunes I use Media monkey to organize my music outside of VDJ. Luckily Media Monkey is Ipod compatible and I can use it to put music onto the Ipod. Today for the second time since I have owned it my Ipod will not allow me to play music until I sync it with Itunes. I don't even have Itunes installed on my computer. Last time this happened I downloaded Itunes and plugged in my ipod to the USB and it did it's thing - unfortunately it deleted all of the playlists I had created when using the Ipod. Is there any way of keeping it from doing this in the future? I mean needing to sync at all - not just deleting the playlists - although that would be nice too. All I want to do is load the 50 or so gigs of music onto the Ipod throw it into my mixdeck's case and us it as a media player from there on without ever having to use Itunes. In the best case I would never use it and in reality it might go months without even being powered on. Basically just want to keep it as-is for the foreseeable future without upgrading the OS or syncing it with my computer.

Any help is greatly appreciated because if I need this as a backup and I go to play music and get that error message things would suck !

Why don't you want to use iTunes?

It's not perfect but does no harm to your computer.

Just one more thing to worry about and I have very limited space on my HD using a 120GB vertex2 SSD. All I want to be able to do is load music once and then basically never have to reconnect the Ipod to the computer. It should be able to run indefinitely as a stand alone device - it makes no sense to me why it would be incapable of working on it's own without needing to sync with my laptop. I keep all my music on an external drive and also don't want to have to keep that connected to my laptop all the time. And there is not room on my hard drive to keep a copy of the 50+ gigs of music I have on my 64GB Ipod.

I thought I was buying a stand alone music player - not a tethered peripheral.

As far as using I-tunes as a media player I see no advantages to using it over Media Monkey

I do understand that if you are a person that uses apps They can't be installed without Itunes - I have no interest in apps currently - I just want a music player. Would have gone with a zune but the Mixdeck has an Ipod dock that is not compatible.

Open iTunes, Go to file, "Edit" preferences, Device tab and click "Prevent iPod fron syncing automatically, then connect your iPod and click the iPod icon under Devices which will open the summary page, under options click the "Manually manage music and videos", this will prevent iTunes from deleting all your stuff....

You will be able to copy to the iPod, but not copy from...

Good Luck,

Joey...

Under preferences ->devices I have a checkbox that says "prevent .... from syncing automatically" that is checked. On the left hand side under "My Ipod" the manually manage music was checked as well.

As soon as i connected the ipod to my USB it began to sync and deleted all my playslists again. Argh! These are playlists that I create on the Ipod while using it - they do not exist in Itunes.

I am running windows 7 professional 64 and Itunes 10.2.1

Any other advice? This is really getting frustrating that every time I plug in my ipod to the computer it deletes all my playlists.

My bast advice to you is, go to an apple store near you and explain your issue with them on how to fix this, they are pretty helpful on these issues, I don't have an iPod, so I'm not really sure what gives with this new unit, but I do know how an iPhone or iPad-iTouch work, so I feel yeah, post your findings afterwards....

Good Luck,

Joey....

Thanks for the info - nearest apple store is over 40 miles away so it might be a while before I make it up there - will report back if I get it figured out.

Update: made a new playlsit and plugged into the PC for a test - this time it did not delete the playlist -who knows - hopefully it stays this way ;)
