Topic: key mixing identifier like the beat matching identifiers

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

How hard would it be to add a mixed in key type of identifier? for example mixed in key has this wheel of fifths. which I cant wrap my head around. VDJ currently notifies you if your next song wont match beats. would it be possible to maybe in the key sorting put a number system in place?

for example and I want to reiterate i don't know jack about keys but lets say I am playing a song in the key of a anything that fits in the key of a would get a an = sign obviously other A keys would be = but I am talking about keys that harmonically work.
anything that would be down or up the scale from say key A would get a +1,2,3,4,5 or -1,2,3,4,5?
I am not saying any needs to be done asap but maybe for version 8 thats about 9 months away? this would be extremely helpful for anyone like me that can bang out sweet beats and sets but is harmonically challenged. especially for someone like me that is deaf in one ear and tone deaf in the other. I can repeat and play harmonies but because I hear them wrong When I am making a list I actually have to listen to the whole song to see if its right but I couldn't tell you what the key is without the help of our already exsisting key identifier.

anyone else think this couls help? chime in.
VDJ is by far the most advanced dj software on the market for deck based systems. They are the unrealised kings of the Sir-auto get outta business and they out pull any taktor in the race. They just need people to stop all the dumb ass people who get the cracks and then bitch publicly that it sucks cus they don't know what the hell they are doing.
Great job on the legal free ware!!

ps The how hard would it be is a real question not me being a smart ass or sarcastic or anything like that!!!! I just read it and it could go either way so I thought i should clarify.

You obviously haven't yet discovered the 'compatible songs' filter folder on the left of the browser window....

Whack a song on a deck, then open the filter folder.

You'll see a list of songs that will work with the one you're playing.

Job done!

just to make sure, that you know you can see the number the same as mixed in key, just rightclick the browser column and select "Key Num" and you will get 7A instead of Am.

I can't remember what the Mixed in key wheel is called but it follows the "circle of fifths" which is the same geometric shape and helps musicians to understand complimentary keys for creating music, just like the color wheel helps artists choose complimentary colors. The circle of fifths refers to positions on a keyboard so you have to know about half tones to calculate or understand it, there are hundreds of resources on the net so I wont go into it, but what you need to know is if you move up or number you are moving a perfect fifth up or down, if you move two numbers up or down you are raising the key a half tone, this will result in an energy boost.

moving one number - harmonically progress through to the next complimentary key - smooth mixing
moving two numbers - raising the key up one halftone - energy mixing, doesn't always sound good, and not good for long mixes better for drops

Both of youguys rock and I didn't know about that at all!!! I am going to go try the suggestions real quick and get back to you on this on this post........

yeah so wow thanks I was able to quickly pull up love is darkness mix that with blacksabath black sabath and katy perry hot n cold seamlessly using the rain and thunder storms for the chorus of love is and the guitar riffs as background for hot n cold.

but could you expand on how the numbers ? or did I missunderstand you? thanks for getting back to me! seriously VDJ followers are loyal and knowledgable. I belong to so many other programs forums that I own and none are as wonderful as our group!

SORRY forgot aboot <--- little Canadian humor eh? (for the tech guys lol. Much respect Adam) the compatable songs forlder just tried that too mixed love is darkness with James getting away with it to hear the differences and it would appear as though it numbers each key 1-7? am I correct in that observation? and that every number lower or higher than one is not such a good idea?
Also, is there a way to get the Key Number to show above the deck so that I see its A# but also 07A in case I forget?

there is actually 12 different keys of modern music

C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G# A, A#, B,

sharps can also be flats, depending on the key of music you are playing...

next you need to know majors and relative minors

C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G# A, A#, B,
A, A#, B,C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#

Majors sound happy, and Minors sound sad, but uplifting... Most dance music is minor. They all use the same notes to make the key but are started from different positions on the keyboard or musical scale

then you have perfect fifths which is what we are dealing with when using the camalot system, for it to make sense you need to also use flats

C, G, D, A, E, B/Cb, F#/Gb, C#/Db, Ab, Eb, Bb, F

yep if your using the default skin, you can click the picture twice to change it to camalot

Using "Key Diff" in the browser will work the scale of fiths as well. Select it in the browser (circled below) and get the key diff in the 0, 1 or 2 that you are looking for, once you load a song in the deck. It needs a song in the deck to have something to compare all the others to.

WOW thanks I will give this all a try! This discuon could totally go in the start up forum! You guys rock I have learned so much.

You can always left click on the key information on the deck to change it from the key value to the camelot key (numeric). This is a function of the default skin and various other skins follow this pattern. There are a few skins that I have seen both values on however.

Check out the following guide on harmonic mixing and music theory --> http://www.mixedinkey.com/HowTo.aspx

I hope that clears up some of what you were asking aboot, eh!

thanks Sup! that does help. I am also checking if the 4-1-2-3 skin does that for the ns6

the standard skins show the key in the track data area of the skin. just above the deck. it shows bpm, track title, key, time remaining, time elapsed etc..
