Topic: Macbook Pro 2010 Model - Adding Headphones and External Speakers

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I have Virtual DJ LE that I got with my Beginner Numark Turntables (http://www.guitarcenter.com/Numark-MixTrack-DJ-Controller-1292606660960-i1545208.gc) that I got at guitar center, see link. If I plug in my Bose sound system to the headphone jack I hear my output fine, but what's the best way to add headphones so I can cue the other track and mix and fade at the right time? All I gathered was something about a 4-channel soundcard... do I need to buy another piece of hardware or is it referring to my software soundcard? I played with the config settings and couldn't yield any results I'm a little confused.

That link doesn't work.

If you have the MixTrack Pro model, then this already has a DJ sound card built-in that will allow both master output and separate headphone pre-listening.

If you have the standard MixTrack model without the built-in sound card, then to be able to pre-listen to music using headphones, you will either need two sound cards or a sound card with multiple outputs, such as a 5.1 surround sound card or preferably a dedicated DJ sound card (E.g: Numark DJIO or Native Instruments Audio 2 DJ.)

With a laptop, you can add a basic stereo USB sound card that will provide you with the additional output that you need.

Alternatively, you can use a single sound card and the mono split option in VirtualDJ's sound setup, however this will only give you MONO sound (Not recommended for live performance.) You will need a Y-splitter cable to split the left/right channels - Please search Google for: 3.5 jack splitter to mono

Hi I have just downloaded the home version which is very good.
The only problem i have is the headphone and mix out only work for 10 mins is this because it is free?
If so if i buy the numark hardware controller that comes with the LE version will that support headphone and mix dual sound card output and read my itunes playlists?

I'm just very confused, I didn't' really understand your detailed explanation... thank you though. Sorry the link didn't work, these are my tables.

I have a Macbook pro with all the default sound card software. I'm mixing at a party tonight and would like to know how to use my headphones, I can do it without them, but it'd be a lot easier if my cue came in through the headphones. The headphones I have are standard headphone jack, not USB. My external speakers I'll be using also use the headphones jack... so do I need like a splitter, what're my options? If you could dumb down the reply it would make it a lot easier for me. Thank you.

That link doesn't work either.

There are two models of MixTrack - A standard model without a sound card built-in ( http://www.numark.com/mixtrack ) and a more expensive Pro model that does have its own built-in DJ sound card ( http://www.numark.com/mixtrackpro )

If your MixTrack does not have a headphone socket or output RCA phono jacks on the back, then you have the standard model.

If this is the case, then to be able to pre-listen to music using headphones, you will either need two sound cards or a sound card with multiple outputs, such as a 5.1 surround sound card or preferably a dedicated DJ sound card (E.g: Numark DJIO or Native Instruments Audio 2 DJ.)

Once you have suitable sound card(s), you will then need to go into CONFIG -> Sound Settings and choose Outputs: Headphones and select the appropriate sound card(s).

If you have the MixTrack Pro model, then you already have everything that you need. Go into CONFIG -> Sound Setup and set your sound configuration as follows:

Inputs: None
Outputs: Headphones
Sound card: 4 out card -> Numark

Click APPLY.

Plug your headphones into the headphone socket of the MixTrack console and connect a pair of powered stereo speakers into the master outputs on the back.

Hi all,

I have a similar question but its a bit different.

1. I have a new Numark MixTrack Pro and Virtual DJ LE that is currently running at the PRO version level (14 days left on the eval).

2. I have the USB connected into my Mac.

3. I have headphones connected into the front of the MixTrack Pro in the "Headphone" jack.

4. I would like to be able to use the Mac speakers as the Master output - and listen to the headphones for cue purposes only. To do this - I have gone into sound setup and selected:

Input = No Input
Outputs = Headphones (Master: First card / Headphones: Second card)
Sound card: 2 Cards --> Built-in output (top line), "MixTrack Pro" (second line).

When I use the above setting - all output is coming from the computer speakers - there is NO headphone audio.

If I change the Sound card setting to "Numark" - I get the same functionality but all only through the headphones (this is expected behavior).

I wanted to ask the Forum if what I am trying to do is possible. I believe it should be - and I believe the settings I described above should work (because I have 2 sound cards - one in the mac - and one in the MixTrack).

Thanks in advanced for any tips!

The MixTrack sound card is not designed to be used in that way.

If you wish to have the sound coming out of your computer's speakers, the easiest option is to simply connect a suitable cable (2x RCA to 3.5" headphone jack) from the master output of the console to the line input of your computer.

Make sure that you configure the sound card correctly for master + headphones - See http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/MixTrack%20Pro.html

The sound will then come out through the computer's speakers (If not, go to your sound card's mixer/control panel and ensure that the line input is not muted and the volume is set to an appropriate level.)

Alternatively, you may be able to do what you are looking for via advanced sound config:

Master | Choose your Mac's built-in sound card | channels 1&2
Headphones | Choose the MixTrack Pro's sound card | channels 3&4
