Topic: What bitrate are you recording your mixes at? - Page: 1

This part of topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information

Hey guys,

I'm going to start recording my sets. I figure 2 - 3 hours long. What do you guys recommend for a bit rate sample? 320 would make the file enormous.

What sample rate are you recording at?

320 for me.
i find lower than that i can hear weird background noise as if there's another tune being played very quietly in the background

You could get away with 256 but no lower than that.

Yup I go with 256 aswell.

Can't wait to hear those sets!

Most online internet radio stations stream at 128. I would do a practice mix, and then adjust up if needed from there. Most of mine are recorded at 192, but the hosting site only accepts 128 so, I convert down.

I always record at 320 bitrate. And if I need an alternate copy, say at 192 or 256 bitrate for smaller bottleneck situations (e.g., someone I know might be really conservative with their mp3 player capacity and thus not want large files), I will save the master copy at a lower bitrate by way of an mp3 editing program (e.g., Pro Tools or something much less expensive like PolderBits).

Agree with most comments so far - 320 is the way to go if you are gonna play them back on any reasonable sound system.

Is it purely for you to listen to your performance and improve or will you share them with others or playback in a club at a latter date.

If you are only playing back for personal listening say on a low quality home system or persoal mp3 player etc then 128 will be fine. If you are playing on a half decent home system or any reasonable disco/club pa then definitely definitely definitely 320. Most djs and audio engineers can hear a 128 low quality recording on a pa immediately as I'm sure you could.

Remember once it is recorded you can't improve the quality from 128 up to 320 (you can do it but it won't change the quality) but you can always reduce the qulity from 320 down to whatever you want - just keep your original quality file for the future.

As always, you guys make perfect sense and have given me some insight. The files are simply being used as samples on a web site I'm developing for my mobile business and will be used to show case other DJs in my network. Not only will this be a business website, but a social network in a sense as well where people can open the page and listen to all sorts of music while they surf the web.

I will record a set tonight at 320 for 2 hours tonight and keep the original mix. I will need to shrink it down to stream on the web. Any suggestions on software to reduce the bit rate?

Thanx guys. All your input is much appreciated.

Hi,

My virtual DJ records at 192kb... How do I upscale to 320kb?

How does one adjust the output bitrate in Virtual DJ itself?
Please help

When you're on the recording tab. Click on the config button. there is a drop down that allows you to choose the bit rate.

I have mine set at 320kb.

i think ines set at 192 or 128....i just left it as it was when i installed.

What I do is record in 320kbps. I play for two online radios and they need me to send the mixes in 128kbps, so what I do is I convert the 320kbps file into a 128kbps file using Audacity (Freeware) but I keep a copy of both in my HDD

i have mine set to whatever is default, never really checked. i was more worried bout any skips or cuts in my mixes

Hey guys...

what bitrate is the default for virtualdj...?

i recorded several session with the default bitrate, then i uploaded to mixcloud, everything is good. But i saw that a higher bitrate is better quality so i changed a few months ago, but now mixcloud says my mp3, is not a mp3 or is corrupted... i thought it may be because of the bitrate, but don't really know...

Some one has the same problem? what bitrate comes by default i do not remember?

Thanks

Mixcloud I think downsample your Mp3 to 128kbit no matter what you upload it as. At least it used to be like that.
They might have changed, been a while since I used it.

But that being said, Mixcloud seems extremely sensitive to mp3 files, saying file is corrupted a lot of times.
I have had this happen with all sorts of mp3 recordings from all sorts of audio software (recoded, normalized etc)
(and its kinda why i stopped using the site).

Try a new recording and see if it happens again.
Also the recording that do fail, try edit the ID tags (right click - properties) in Windows, to just change the mp3 headers.
Alternatively use the free http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ to just save it again ..
sometimes that fixes the mixcloud's "corrupted file" message...

320 is my preferred bit rate any lower just doesn't seem to sound right

I always record at 320. From there I run it though my DAW with Ozone on the master channel. I can export it at any bit rate I want doing it this way.
