Were I in this young man's shoes, I would be asking my parents if they wouldn't mind taking out a Premium Membership subscription for me.
This would give access to more tracks than he could possibly want, when starting, and as it's a subscription service if he decided not to pursue DJ'ing any further the subscription could be cancelled and all is well, without the "what are you going to do with all these X?"...I am certain that $9.99 is within the reach of his parents (and him, via doing chores!).
I know that had the Premium Membership system been available when I started out, I'd have used it as the first port of call.
Just my thoughts and no offence is meant to anyone.

While it's right to stand up and promote the 'legal' aspect of things, I have to agree with my sista Seana on this...
For all us 'mature' DJ's, yes we had no option to buy our music - or did we.....
The first gigs I did 20+ years ago were with my limited vinyl collection plus vinyl borrowed from friends. In fact some house parties were played purely on borrowed vinyl... Even Grandmaster Flash used to raid friends/family collections!!!
But here we are in the 21st century and things have changed beyond recognition. We can't force our ways on new DJ's. We've had to adapt, these guys take digital music and ways to access it or granted.
As already said here, many of us started with cracked software and progressed to being legit over time.
If this guy is new and practicing, then he should start by ripping his own CD collection, then his parents (if they have the right tastes) and then his friends... Yes! I said it!
Once he's home his skills and is ready to go out and face the world, he can come back and ask for more advice about how to build his DJ business which will include obtaining legal music.
And as for DJ names, my 10 year old son already has one. Does it make him a DJ? No. Does he have aspirations? Yes.
Cheers,
Roy

SMFH this is some real bull shit man! how you come and ask were to get illegal music... thats just retarted. i have to agree with alot of the Dj in this forum and say that you gatta pay your dues. and not even just that but come on rippin of music of youtube?? thats just lame like he said its bad quality. and also it bothers me that now a days everyone is a god damn dj. heck i bet jesus mosses george bush and even obama is a dj too! this is why the dj world, the dj business is going down hill. theres a dj in every god damn coner and what do they do press the sync button and bam they think they can mix a mediocre dj that gets a quick 20 bucks taking away money from the real djs that really know what they are doing. amazing. dont get me wrong the sync feature is great but i think it ruins the Djin thing for most of us. anyhow i am 21 so not far off from this kid thats 17 and i started mixing when i was roughly 16 MAYBE 17 like him and i pay for all my music i invest so much money buying most of the NOW music collections in order for me to have music to mix. i got a job and saved up to get all my god damn music now i have subscriptions and what not and i still buy cds and mp3s from online stores. so i am not liking that few of you guys are defending and encouraging his actions he should pay up his dues like i did and i am pretty sure home boy is in a way better financial situation then i was at his age! this is what bothers me most about this dj shit. this also goes out to all the cocky think i am a pro dj just cause they have serato but they dont admit that they too use the lesss sophisticated SYNC button on serato all you have to do on that crap is also match up the lines. i know cause i have it as well. i hate all this trash djs that ruin the FIeld for the rest of us that actually try to do our best and mix on point to give our clients the best possible job. but we get push aside for the crappy shit sync djs that dont even pay for there music and make us lose our gigs for the 50 bucks they ask for
*sorry i got carried away

It's all to easy to call yourself a DJ nowadays, more and more people doing it, there are more people doing it now but there’s a larger range of Experience, quality and professionalism too.
Experience, quality and professionalism is still a small percentage of what’s out there, the new breed of digital opportunists i.e. every man with a laptop and an internet connection - is what’s making up the numbers but there not getting booked and if they do it for nothing at a low level. Just means the poor miss out on good entertainment!
I remember people steeling record and CD collections back in the day in order to be a DJ or dealing drugs.
The pro level is about the same, I regularly struggle to get a pro on a Sat night. This is backed up by myself not having to lower my fee's in a recession/hard times.
I always thought that if you had to take yourself out of your comfort zone by steeling or undercutting which in my opinion is still steeling! Then you should quit and get a regular job working for an organisation of some sort where you don't have much responsibility other than turning up and putting the hours in.
Being a DJ you have to run yourself as a business, the time required messing about (as some would here - NLU's in particular) means that you would be working for less than minimal wage, nothing or it would actually be loosing money.
Education, Education, Education!!!

All old DJ's need to chill out. Just because you had a hard childhood doesn't mean it has to be hard for all generations. Kids are different now. If they need to read a book for school they go on Youtube and listen to it instead of buying a book. Does that mean they stole a book?
Ripping music from Youtube is not stealing. Youtube is free for the public. It is possible to setup computer with internet at some party and stream music videos from youtube without ripping it. Would it make a big difference?
DJ's support artists by playing their music so other people will buy it.

ARE YOUR RETARDED? Ripping music from you tube and using it is ILLEGAL! Playing YOUTUBE at a PARTY IS ILLEGAL and isn't DJING! you must be young. no one said they had a hard life or childhood. we are stating the facts. that most of you young wack ass wanna be dj's are ruining the culture and pay rate for REAL DJ'S. Most of you can't mix 2 tracks together to save your lives, don't know how to count beats, measures, tempos, what KEY is and don't get me started on some of the BS "check out my mix or check out my scratching" i see on boards now a days. i have said it before and i'll say it again COVER YOUR SCREEN and mix 2 tracks together, oh wait you can't.
Another thing that pisses me off is the utter LAZINESS of today's "microwave dj's" just look on this board alone. know one wants to search or look for answers anymore or maybe oh i don't know READ MANUALS. they just post up on the board "can't map my fader, i didn't read the manual for my mixer and i'm sure its a VDJ problem and not the fact i'm an idiot and didn't take 2 seconds to look in the manual" then get their panties in a bunch when know one answers the stupid post that they can answer themselves.
unfortunately its never gonna change with the new technology and the new microwaves will never understand why the "old dj's" try REAL DJ'S get pissed at some of the shit thats asked or posted perfect example

@dj jeovani, the guy diddnt come here and ask where he can download "illegal" music he asked where to download music for "free"
theres a major difference between illegal and free.
why is it that most people commenting are banging on about illegal music when the guy clearly wanted advice on where to get free music from so he "diddnt" have to rip it off yout tube
are so many people thatt concearned about his youtube endeavour, that they would slate a new member instead off just reading the post without predjudice in the first place and realising the guy wants help in getting free music without being illegal.
there isn't one person on this forum that could say with all conviction that they have "never" even once downloaded something illegaly. it may be a tv show, movie, music, ebook, application, anything there is a million and 5 different things you could download. half the time you may not even realise you just downloaded illegaly.
how many of you used a cracked VDJ before you decided to buy it? or ableton, cue, cubase, pcdj etc.etc.
leave the lad alone and give him some guidance aas to where he can download "free" "legal" music.

lol oh man. really all i am saying is to everyone calls themselves a dj and like others have stated 80 % of them wont be able to mix for there lives with out the sync or there computers. and i am ok with guys starting out and what not cause i was there at some point. but still i know its true that many guys dont ever progress from the NOOB status and take away money from the real pros only cause they can mix with the sync button and seriously we all have to agree that its bad for the pros or people who actually make a decent living out of djin..... beacause like it or not people would rather pay 50 bucks for the noob dj then 500-300 for the pro of course considering what the client wants and for how many hours. trust me i see this all the time at priviate parties/ clubs man even the clubs djs are getting screw out of $$. so of course this asking for free tracks would bother anyone. and like i said i am not that much older then the kid asking for tracks and i also started out more or less aorund 16-17 years old and like i said i found a way to buy my NOW collections untill i have a decent library and i still continue to buy my music.

youtube lets people download copyrighted music to listen to,not for commercial use, its still copyrighted, limewire was shut down by the courts, i think its hard to believe that a person cant find any other way to get music besides ripping form youtube
