I have a crazy question about how people name music. When downloading music and vids off of a variety of places I have notices people name things in different formats. Myself, I use sentence case lettering and it gets pretty annoying to have to rename most downloads to keep a "clean" data base. The ones that make it harder to fix are the ones that use underscores between all words ie - Mary_J_Bliege_-_Name of Song. My questions really is - is there a purpose to use the underscores? Like I said, just a crazy question. Thanks.

the purpose is usually at illegal download sites.. since many web-browsers doesnt accept empty spaces in the url title.. or at links to click at.
for example (with underscore) :
http://www.mp3downloadblog.com/david_guetta_when_love_takes_over.mp3
vs this that doesnt work :
http://www.mp3downloadblog.com/david guetta when love takes over.mp3

Thanks for the responses. The other night I downloaded a bunch from 8th Wonder and they had underscores. I sure hope they are legal. I have to be honest, when I first started out I was getting music where ever I could. Now I am slowly remaking my data base to all legal stuff. In the past year I have probably "exchanged 10k songs and hopfully this year I will be totally clean. I am sure I am not the only DJ that has done this. Also, the legal stuff is almost always better quality.

Now the good news...:
Virtual dj filter/ignore the underscores in search, no need to remember if your files have underscores or not.
Makes search easier. Try it !

As previous guys said:
The underscores have used forever in the internet instead of a space, because URLS can't hve spaces in them.
You'll find underscore instead of spaces not only in mp3's but in jpg's, zip's and every other file you download from the net.
