Topic: Ion Discover DJ - mindless

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

This is some mindless crap... I tried the Ion Discover DJ, it is a great tool mapped to VDJ 6.0.5 pro, yes there is a link to the mapping for it, if you are looking for it on this forum... It worked "aight" til i broke it... my main scratch (jog) wheel - platter, seems like it needs some WD-40 or sumin compared to the platter on the left, I scratch mainly on my right and fade with my left...(yea i'm right handed it depends on what feels good to you), but now it works PERFECTLY... for now, I was pressing down to hard yesterday when i was practicing... It works 10x better now on my scratch hand.. the (right) platter when i push it forward of back, stops at almost the same place a "real" vinyl would.. its sicc...

LOL

So would you recommend the controller to use since the mapping is implemented?

Hey I bought the Discover DJ too and I just discovered Virtual DJ so I downloaded the trial version but it doesnt have the controller mapping files and everything. I wanna try VDJ first before buying the pro version. Do you think you could send me those mapping files?

THX

I would recommend Ion Discover DJ if you are on a budget, It really does work great with VDJ 6, just make sure you tweak it in the options, such as the jog wheel sensitivity and so on... I also deleted some of the mapping... the buttons by the crossfader really get in my way...and cause unwanted "crap" to happen when I am doing some heavy scratching, so i just turned them all off.

Remember you get what you pay for... this thing looks and feels like a plastic toy... and it will break like a toy...though i feel like i broke it in, however pay that extra money for the insurance plan from the store you buy it from... trust me..alrdy glued some felt into the crossfader because it was bleeding after 2 weeks of heavy scratching (3-5hours at a time). The crossfader is attached to metal and the metal opens and closes on the plastic... see the problem...

As for the guy that wants me to send you the mapping... honestly, I feel it is the right thing to do, but sorry, I paid for the pro edition so i could get it too...and I know how easy it is to find, or even build cracks for programs... Just buy it and you will be happy, get all the updates, new patches, skins, blah blah blah... it is worth it.

After playing with this thing more while I am waiting on my Numark NS7 to arrive... since they have bigger platters than my other "PoS" VCI-100, I will say that it really can outperform the micro platter jog wheels... until it breaks... if you are EXTREMELY careful with the crossfader... crab scratching is possible... But seriously I have been extremely careful since i alrdy have to use the unit upside down since my main scratch hand is right, (platter is still holding up), but I have alrdy had to put some thread and then tried felt again inside the groove on the xfader...

This is a very good tool to learn on, and by the time you break both sides of the crossfader on this plastic toy, you should be ready to move up to the real units.

Dj smackwater

what are you talking about?

you state that the ion discover will potentially break like a toy & mention insurance plans
so its not an ideal purchase is it ????

But you continue & recommend the ion discover if your on a budget.

you are contradicting yourself.... please expand?

what are you using to enable you to mix & monitor are you simply using it for scratching ?

you didn't even include or consider the additional cost of a decent quality audio card for monitoring in your budget recommendations?

The ion discover doesn't have a pitch control slider.so you would have to press the button & keep your eyes fixed on the screen when mixing, keeping track of the parameters.

Don't dj's normally mix by ear....... & not eye & ear & fingertips? what if the pitch button were to jam due to debris?

your from the usa...how much does it cost? its £99 in the uk

Have you evaluated the total additional costs of discover & audio card when compared with a similar priced product. eg.. vestax spin.(even if out of stock & also considered toyish )

It doesn't sound like a inexpensive unit to me once you consider these factors. It's unique selling point seems to be the accurate sensitive jog wheels for scratching. This could have been an useful product if the jog wheel was sold as separates & durable.

Dj smackwater .........Don't misinterpret.... I know its not an official review .but its evident that you were asked for a recommendation.

I'm very critical of manufacturers cashing in on dj culture with disposable products .
( Ion is the budget brand of Numark..)

I anticipate a 102 key pc keyboard with a jog wheel & crossfader attached to it next....

@ DJ smackdaddy

Please accept my apologies for confusing you with dj smackwater ( houston hardknock records ) & misspelling your name.

It is kewl that is not even my true DJ name, its just an inside joke to a small few... Ok I breifly mentioned that I remapped some things. If you need pitch control remap something like the volume (level) knobs. I remap this thing all the time to change it to work the way i need it to with a certain mix. For example I am currently using those pitch-/+ buttons as play_pause and deck select buttons respectively, and remapped the sync, rev, and cue buttons to act as hot cues. I use the sync hot cue button to "cheat" when I am cutting words because I find it difficult to do that accurately with this, however if you take some time to fine tune your jog sensitivity in the options then you could most likely make this work correctly too.

Ok as for recommending this... that is not a true yes or no, but i think you could learn a lot from this if you are just starting out. You can prepay it online through your local stores then go pick it up around $99 + tax, or just walk in and pay about 129 + tax. I suggest the insurance for it if you plan to continue using this for any length of time, because it does seem to break easily if you are new to scratching and apply to much pressure on the platters, also is you get rough with the crossfader it will start bleeding in no time flat.

I think the real power this unit delivers comes from VDJ... since you can remap the knobs and buttons and customize the xfader to actually be used for scratching, because these are things it cannot do right out of the box with its native software.

As for comparing this to other products, i don't plan to spend any time doing that really, because I did not start this to be a formal review by any means. I will say this... it is not an ns7. LOL

In my very humble opinion this is a disposable "learning tool."

@tygaelement - Hope this answered your questions and cleared up a couple things.

Thank you all for replying to this post.

@ DJ smackdaddy

You neglected to mention what you are using to monitor & mix using your disposable learning tool.

On the presumption that you want a good quality audio device.
consider that Numark DJ i O or Native Instruments Audio 2 DJ Audio Interface costs £ 75 + in the uk
I'm unaware of any alternatives.

That's almost as much as the controller & mixvibes cross at £99.

Also add the additional costs of vdj 6 as it's not included

I think that's too much disposable income to waste if your just starting out.

Is DJ smackdaddy A personal joke related to rocks, sex or rick james, ike turner style physical conduct ?

@tygaelement - LOL, the name is a nickname of my character name in WoW...

@tygaelement - LOL, This was never intended to be anything but a mindless rant about this thing i bought to try it out. This is a VDJ forum so most people reading this already have VDJ and might be looking for hands on controllers. I look at the screen when i am mixing with this thing, honestly what do you expect? Real dj equipment is expensive. For example I dropped 1100 for my ns7, this hundred dollar thing is a very inexpensive controller since i alrdy have VDJ pro, because i have used it in the past and familiar with it and I am going to be using it with my ns7, so paying for VDJ Pro and NS7, now that is expensive. You are being extremely critical about this, so if you want a better review on this, go read a thread that says something along the lines of Ion Discover - Review or buy one and be creative with it.

I'm 33 & been djing 22 yrs & seen & owned everything worthy.
I get a lot of posts from newbies asking for advice on dj gear on my youtube account so i try to cover all the facts & look at the fine print.
I also have a background in electronics & ive built plenty of stuff which outperforms a lot of the gear whats released.

Ive not visited the site in a few years so i'm & catching up on things but notice little has changed gear wise.

I think djs should lead technology but i feel like technology is leading & pimpin dj's so i'm very critical of manufacturers & budget has little to do with it .... I used to own technics sl dz1200 cdjs which were endorsed by the beatjunkies & masters at work & almost got pimped.. so ive learnt my lesson.

I'll try to hold back my rick james backhand & wu tang sword when they behave themselves.... lol

Do you have some decent Jog sensitivty for scratch, Cue and the Bend on discovery DJ ? and tips great?
