Topic: Cataloguing Digital Music

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

What's the best way to put your digital music into a library?

Is it best by bpm, by key, or by album/artist etc?

Just wondering how everyone else catalogues their digital tunes?

Everybody thinks differently.

You need to devise a system that works for YOU. You need it to be "intuitive" for how you think.

What are your options?

BPM
genre
decade
year
dance steps
ethnic
holiday

I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea

It really comes down to how you want to have the cataloguing set up. Has the previuos reply stated there is many and everyone has a different system

For me it comes down to what type of musiic and what decade from

Agreed its best to do what works for you? How do YOU think about finding the next track...

Either way you need to get the tags built correctly - not in VDJ either. There are some really good tools out there to help you especially if you have a large collection of files and are just getting tound to tagging them properly.

ITunes is OK, there is also RealPlayer, Tag%Rename. My personal choice is MediaMonkey.

Once you have your tunes tagged, VDJ has the tools you need. Whether it be virtual folders, filter folders, playlists etc...

I have my files stored one way - for managing a large collection and then use all of the above to fine tune my collection for when I'm working...

Cheers,

Roy
