Hello all. I am looking to purchase an external soundcard for my system that won't break the bank. I currently use the Total Control for VDJ and run a Sony Viao Laptop. I don't use turntables nor do I scratch. Just need something that is better than the Turtle Beach Micro that I have been using and has 2 outputs to mixer from USB. Headphone output would be nice and mic input is not necessary. I run everything through the house mixer or my Yamaha 12/4FX. Thanks for the help.

How much is not breaking the bank?
I have had great success with the M-Audio Fast Track Pro which is about $200.
P.S. due you still live in Japan?

I use the Numark DJ i/o and I'm very happy with it. They're about $120 on Guitar Center's website, and they even have a mic input, so you can plug into a sound system with no mixer if you need to.

Hey HOP.... I got to Zama in July of 07. Where were you at.... I work at the MP BN ..... Last name Rondeau.... I bet we crossed paths!
Ok now back to business. I have never used an external sound card so not sure how I would connect it. Also, not sure if I have firewire. I have 3 USB2 complient, headphone and mic, modem, ethernet, hdmi, vga, express card, multimedia card reader, and one that says s400. I believe that to be firewire. I did a little research and found that USB2 sends 480mb persecond and s400 sends 393.216 mb per second. Looks like the USB2 is faster. But after more reading they say even though firewire (ieee1394, iLink or whatever they want to call it) transgers faster and cleaner. Am I right or wrong? So I must ask - is the profire that much better (if i can use it) that much better than the fast track pro?
Thanks for the help!

I want to ask you this one. What about upgrading to the Hercules RMX with built in sound card? I think the only 2 downsides are if the controller soundcard go bad you are screwed or sometimes in slow places I don't use the controller. Thoughts?

ABGary,
I retired from the 296th Army Band... spent alot of time djing at the CZCC on Saturdays.
If you are not doing anything too fancy, I still think the Fast Track Pro is the way to go. I would just take the stereo out from the internal mixer in VDJ and plug into the pioneer mixer at the CZCC Firelite lounge and monitor my cues with the headphones from the headphone out of my card. You can also separate each deck to a stereo output and mix and cue with a typical analog mixer... I did not because it was easier to set up mixing within VDJ.
The firewire card Chuck mentioned sure looks nice! A little too much cash to give up now when everything is working fine now.
My first sound card was an ESI U46DJ (I hear this is a good card for time code use) but I got rid of it because the tech support sucked, driver issues and you could not A/B between the outpoint and cues. With the FTP, there was also an improved sound quality overall... it can work at a higher bit rate.

Fast Track pro hasn't the best sound available for the money. Pour dynamic Range and it is made for musicians use. Even NI Audio 4 or 8 has better sound.
The very best sound you could get, better than Fast Track, or any M-Audio, NI or Prosonus, Maya, ESI U46 and others sounds cards; Echo AudioFire 2 (I prefer AudioFire 4 but that is for Timecode use). It is about $199, but really has a better sound that you can hear. It is small, and it's Firewire. It's even better to get a $20 usd Firewire xpress card and use this AudioFire 2. You will have master out and headphones and also LINE IN input for your recordings. It has Windows 32 and 64 bits drivers and also support Mac OS.
You will get deep bass and nearly the sound quality than you have with a CDJ-1000 CD Player, so it worth it.
Good Luck!

@ACW DJ
So, can you look at what I wrote above and let me know if that is indeed a Firewire port I have? Thanks.
I have done some looking at the DJio and have found a lot of mixed opinions.
