Topic: Hercules RMX Control Panel Icon Disappeared - New Speaker Set Up - ASIO WDM

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hi, ladies and gents--I hope you're all having a happy 2010 thus far! So here's my issue:

I've been using the Hercules RMX for a couple of months with minimal issues. My set up is still in the bedroom as I'm working on improving my skills. I've had the RMX hooked up with RCA cables out of the 1 and 2 outputs to a stereo system and things have been working fine. Today I finally went out and got myself an active speaker. The guy in the music store convinced me to pick up two 1/4 inch wires to connect my RMX to the speaker (he provided a dual female to single male adapter to make it work). Welll, I set everything up (one wire for output 1, the other for output 2) and the speaker works well. However, when I went into the Hercules control panel, to see if I can bring the output volume down (speaker is insanely loud even when I have the master volume on the RMX barely above zero!), I noticed that the sound setting in the lower right hand corner on the control panel had changed from WDM to ASIO. Now, I know that I always had this setting on WDM, because I've read these forums enough to know that I don't really need ASIO unless I'm running time codes, which I'm not. I'm just using the RMX solo. Here's the thing: When I tried to change the setting back to WDM, nothing happened. Just wouldn't switch. All other functions on the control panel worked, but no response when I click on WDM. Since the only thing that I had ever changed in my setup is the wiring out to a speaker, the genius that I am decides to pull out the 1/4 wires to see what would happen. Wouldn't you know that I got a message saying that the Hercules RMX is no longer responding. So I shut it down. I click on the control panel icon and (don't know why I did this since I never have) I click Exit. The icon dissapeared and now I can't get it back. I've tried looking it up on my own program files to see if I can add to the icon tray, but I can't find it.

So:

1) How do I get my Hercules control panel icon again?
2) How did changing the wires change my setting from WDM to ASIO?
3) Can I just get and RCA wire that can be adapted to fit into a single 1/4 inch jack for the speaker?

Thanks for taking the time to bear with me.

As an active speaker you should have a volume control on it for the built-in amp. Turn that all the way down, set the master volume to where you'd like it to be and then turn the active speaker back up...

WRT to the ASIO problem, using the 1/4" jacks won't cause that to change. Make sure you haven't got "Apply EQ to external inputs" selected in the config as I believe this forces ASIO mode.

Cheers,

Roy

You can start the Rmx control panel from Windows Control Panel ( in Classic view mode), or directly from the installation folder ( c:\program files\Hercules\DJ Console Series).

The DJC Edition of Virtual DJ included with the Rmx always works in ASIO, and it makes the switch automatically in the control panel when launched ( and vice versa when VDJ is closed). This is perfectly normal.

Thanks to all for taking the time to reply. The Hercules Icon reappeared after the second time I rebooted my machine and replugged it in. That seems to ok at the moment, so I was able to work on this a bit.

@ Gadget: On the Control Panel screen for the RMX, in the volume output section, i brought down channels 1 and 2 to about a quarter of the way up (default was set to about 4/5th of the way up). Doing that I was able to set the volume control on the actual speaker (a Peavey PR15p) to about 3 (out of 10). Now I can raise the master volume on the RMX itself to about 20%, and that gives it pretty good volume for when the channel faders are up to about 75%. This brought up another dilemna for a newbie like me: with all the volume sliders that can be manipulated (virtual and tactile!), how do I know I'm getting the best sound? What's the best combination of settings to optimize sound quality when playing off of one speaker (or two for that matter)? It could be in my neurotic head, but I think the bass doesn't sound nearly as good the higher I push the volume. I got this speaker specifically because it sounded pretty good in the store, but it doesn't sound just right now at home. Maybe it has to be broken in? Lol.

In any case, I'm thinking about figuring out how to connect the RCA outputs on 1 and 2 to the speaker using a similar adapter (speaker has 1/4 jacks). I read that the RCA outputs give out a lower signal, so maybe that might help better control the overall volume?

Note: I know I can solve some of this by adding another speaker, then one wire to the left and one wire to the right, and boom the speakers work their stereo magic. But until I can save the pennies to do so, I'd like to get the best quality sound out of this single one.

@ Phatso: I reread the Hercules RMX manual and you are totally right that that VDJ defaults to working in ASIO. I am going to check this out later, because I would much rather use the WDM mode if the sound quality is about the same. I'll see if I can change it to WDM after I've launced VDJ.

Thanks all.

As I've said, The DJC Edition of Virtual DJ included with the Rmx ALWAYS works in ASIO, meaning you cannot use it in WDM ( only the PRO version would provide you with the necessary menu to do this).

The reason manufacturer provide ASIO driver with soundcards is because they provide better performances with audio applications... and using Timecode is not the only reason to use them.

I'm using the CDJ5LE version that came with an RMX unit and it does occasionally flips into WDM mode... still works fine but thought i'd jus say that. I try to keep it on ASIO mode as thats what i've been advised to do. But it still works in WDM mode...

Seana23,

If you have VirtualDJ 5 DJC version for the Rmx, it should always be operate in ASIO except if you have switched in the 20-days of trial version of VirtualDJ Pro (as you have no sound setup menu in VirtualDJ 5 DJC for Rmx, you have no access to the option "Enable EQ on Inputs", which, in VirtualDJ Pro, switches the Rmx in ASIO when activated and switches the Rmx in WDM when disabled.
VirtualDJ 5 DJC version for DJ Control Steel can operate both in ASIO and in WDM (as the developer must plan that you may have a sound card operating only in WDM), but the version for DJ Console Rmx operates only in ASIO since ASIO mode is better than WDM in Windows (better latency, and better control over the audio inputs).
Which version of VirtualDJ 5 DJC do you use (is it VirtualDJ 5.2.2 DJC)?
