Topic: Quad-core laptop - still not happy

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

So I've been using Dell desktop for about 3 month now and it works perfect. Recently I decided to try using laptop for VDJ. I ordered latest Alienware m15x.

Intel Core i7 720QM 1.6GHz (2.8 GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)
4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz 2 x 2048MB
15.6-inch Wide FHD 1920x1080 (1080p) WLED
1GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M
500GB SATAII 7,200RPM

After testing 3 soundcards (Denon HC4500, Indigo DJx and Presonus Firebox) with this laptop I found out that it's not compatible with VDJ's Advanced MasterTempo (keylock) mode. Fast mode works OK but in Advanced mode if I try to play 2 songs at the same time the sound is slow and distorted.

Turns out these laptops are made for gaming but not for audio? How come it has super-fast CPU, memory and super-slow USB, firewire and express-card slot? Or VDJ just has options that do not work on laptops? I use it on desktop and all soundcards work no problem.

Are all three soundcards ASIO capable?

Yes. All tested soundcards have ASIO drivers and used with external mixer.

A PC optimized for gaming is big , loaded and powerful, which is perfect for audio applications, but unfortunately, they do not use the ressources in the same manner. Gaming is more geared toward video and memory, while audio will require more out of the CPU, HD and bus port (if your soundcard and HD are connected to the USB for example)

Check out this guide which will show you changes your can perform to improve the performance of your computer:

This neat little program is also pretty useful for disabling unused services:

Once this is done, try modifying the ASIO settings, as the default values are not always appropriate for your specific computer.

try going bak to basics with windows XP, and turn off all unnessary services (a good app called 'game booster' disables everything you dont need) and rember to set your page file to the maximum allowed, n try a ram freeing program before you run VDJ also right click mycomputer, go to perpoties then to to the advanced tab and then performance then aduject for best performance its the little things that make a big differance! any questions just ask.
