Topic: Line Out (PC) to Line In (PC)

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I got my speakers hooked up to my desktop PC and I got my laptop connected to the desktop PC through line in (line out from the laptop) Now this is a bit of a silly question but is this a good idea? Can this break something if too much power comes through?

I heard it's not a good idea to hook up two power devices like this to use through line-in, similar to connecting a stereo to the PC's line-in.

I am not having problems, however when I turn up the volume I hear a lot of noise, but I know it's coming from the power because as soon as I unplug the laptop from the power and run it of the battery it sounds fine. Can I somehow get rid of this "power noise"?

Thanks for your help guys.

Hi Mate

Firstly the noise you hear may well be caused by what is called a ground loop. This can happen between any two pieces of equipment which are mains powered and have an audio connection cable betwen them. It in easily cured by using a Ground Loop Isolator between the two computers. Available from most Pro audio equipment suppliers.

On the damage side of things just make shure that the laptops output volume control is adjusted below the level where you hear any distortion in the sound and you should be fine.

Hi Daz, thanks for your informative answer. :-) Yes, indeed, I only hear the distortion sounds when the PC's speakers are loud, I also noticed the distortion is less when I use a external sound card for my laptop but it's still present. I will look into getting one of those things that you suggested.
