Ok, first of all I'd just like to say hello to everyone out there, since this is my first post and it does pay to be polite when you're about to make a complete fool out of yourself....
As a bit of an intro, I'm a hard house/hard trance bedroom DJ (hey, we don't all get chances!) and I'm looking into testing the waters with this virtual DJing thing. My normal set up is a set of 1200mk2s connected through a piddly Behringer mixer, so I'm used to doing things the old fashioned way, but it's getting harder to find clubs that have vinyl, and indeed one particular tune in my record collection when I'm mid-set.
Since it's nearly christmas, I'm going to go out and buy myself a new toy - probably something like the Numark Total Control interface, and over the last day or two downloading demoes of all the various DJing programs to try them out on the computer to see which ones I get on best with. After much trial and error it's definitely got to be VirtualDJ or Cue, so I've come here to look through the various pieces of software to see which would work best for me and I ran into a sudden problem.....
The comparison (is that spelt right? I can't even manage my own language well!) page is very helpful, but it doesn't mention which versions are compatible with external controllers, so I went to have a look at the various individual product pages and they don't help that much either. The only reference I can find anywhere refers to the Home edition mentions that it's designed for mouse and keyboard users in smaller setups.
I'm going to be running this from my home PC, not a club or anything fancy like that, and with my job vanishing in the next 6 months I can't really justify the £200ish it would cost for the Pro version, especially on top of the £155ish for the controller, although I would find a way to justify the cost of the home version.
So.... my embarrissingly newbiesque question....
Does the Numark Total Controller work with all version of Virtual DJ, or would I need to spend lots to get the Pro version?
Thanks for getting this far, and thanks for any help!

The comparison page does show external controller support - Please see the line MIDI / HID Controller Support on http://www.virtualdj.com/products/comparison.html
You will need VirtualDJ Pro to be able to use the software with any controller of your choice.
Alternatively, you can purchase selected hardware such as Hercules DJ Console RMX/Steel/MP3e2 or Ion iCue which include a free limited edition of the software. However, this can only be used with the hardware it comes with and has other limitations (See the comparison page.) Limited Editions can be upgraded to VirtualDJ Pro at a discount.
VirtualDJ Home Edition and VirtualDJ Basic do not support external controllers - They are for mixing with your mouse and keyboard only.
Hercules DJ Console RMX is highly recommended - It includes everything you need - Hardware console with built-in DJ sound card and VirtualDJ v5 Console Edition.

Thanks for that - I told you it was an embarrassing newbie question, although in my defence I was looking for something along the lines of "USB control interface", and didn't think that it might be called anything else! Sorry about that!
I'll have a look at that Hercules, but at a quick glance it's heading out to the territory of bank manager saying no at the moment. Looks like I might have to carry on working the old fashioned method for now and keep looking around to see what other options I've got. Thanks for the help though... I most likely will be back (although hopefully, without the embarrassing newbie questions next time!)

If RMX is too much, you could always look at Hercules MP3e2 or Ion iCue, which are much cheaper.
However, these do not have a built-in sound card, so if you wish to pre-listen with headphones, you would need to add an additional card (E.g: Simple USB 'stick' sound card is adequate for this purpose for home/bedroom use.)

That Hercules MP3e2 looks like it might do the trick - simple and cheap enough to start with (and rewiring a sound card to give me a cue out isn't going to be too much hassle), and then if I get into it more I might look at saving up for the bigger Hercules RMX. Thanks for the suggestion!

If you couold push the budget, go for the RMX. In the future, when you have a bit more cash, you can buy a pair of timecode vinyls and use them through the RMX.
This way, your one purchase can help safeguard/reuse your original equipment.
Also remember that with the Hercules products, you can upgrade to Pro at a discount.
Suggestion:
* Buy the RMX
* Ask for Timecode Vinyl for Christmas
* Ask for Pro upgrade for Christmas
Even if you just get the ca$h you may get enough to get the timecodes and upgrade ;-)
Cheers,
Roy
