ASIO is used best with time code solutions. I use my RMX in WDM mode. Reason being it works with Skype, and I use Skype for my web-radio show.

Asio offers better latency but uses more resources. Asio is perfect for controllers where button presses can be translated to the software in a few milliseconds.
WDM generally has latencies of 30ms plus, but doesn't require specific hardware and will run on pretty much any PC. Most inbuilt PC cards are WDM or directsound.
I would suggest Asio for controller or timecode use but it will depend on your machine as to whether it runs well or not.

WDM (Windows Driver model) is the standard used by Windows for multimedia applications (playing MP3, movies, etc). It originally allowed 1 input and 1 stereo output (remember the first SoundBlaster cards ???)
In order to bypass this limitation, Steinberg (of Cubase fame) came up with the ASIO driver:

In VDJ, any Multichannel soundcard (i.e. that as at least 4 outputs) will allow headphone PFL. Remember that the Rmx , and other DJ soundcards , were designed for DJ applications, so it wouldn't make sense if headphone PFL was not availalble...
