Topic: Different Music Volumes when mixing

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

So after a few days of playing around with the new decks i've only mastered 'beat matching' as mixing. Play one song, beat match it then cut base on other song then blend it in (n00b)

Anyway, found that some songs will be playing real loud, then i introduce the other song and seems really quite. Most of my music, if not all is 128Kbs.

One thing i have noticed is that "Auto Gain" is set to "Auto". Would this make any effect as i don't want to be fidling around with the settings as it took me 2 hours just to get music to play out through my speakers (Due to the fact i have 2 sound cards, i'm no PC n00b lol)

What is 'Auto Gain' too?

Thanks
Dan

Best to run your MP3's through this program: http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/

I set my ones to 94db but it's personal preference which level you set.

Chances are it's just unbalanced MP3's causing the problem and that'll sort it.

You can find the Virtual DJ manual here: http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/PDFManuals.html and it explains what the different gain settings are for.

Yeah that will sort out the volumes but what's the best program for running your mp3's through to make them sound good at the moment?

Ah, so its actually dodgy MP3's then?

Thanks for the help guys. I'll try out Mp3 gain. So should i turn on or off Auto gain in the control panel?

Thanks
Dan

Hi Dan,

If your tracks are all ran through MP3gain then you don't really need to use the inbuilt autogain in Virtual DJ. You could try both settings to see which sounds better with your set up.

Cheers - Keith

will that program work with mp4's. I am having some problems here and there with my videos.

are all your tracks scanned into vdj...

Not so much dodgy MP3's as much as MP3's recorded and/or encoded at different levels.
My advice, yes, turn off Auto Gain in VDJ and set your MP3 levels outside of VDJ (using MP3Gain or an equivalent utility program).

Once you do this, you won't have to tamper with audio levels/gain within VDJ.

Thanks Jimmy,

But Platinum Notes put's _PN at the end of each tracks file name after you've scanned it and obviously this isn't acceptable so is there anything else that's been tested?

What does Platinum Notes actually do?

Makes mp3's sound good by eq-ing them

Ahhhhh,

I find 99% of my tracks OK, but if any are needing a little tweak then I just change them using Goldwave.

Thanks for the info though :)

Keith

I use mp3 gain here, works good for me and best of all it's free. To answer Jimspinnin question, no it doesn't work with mp4's.

Yes, this is supposed to be a good program. I haven't used it but I've heard good reports about it

http://www.goldwave.com/

Goldwave is really excellent. I have made several 74 minute mixes (quite a while ago) using Goldwave and Multiquence it's sister product.

Dead easy to use and not bloated with crap like several other wave editors.

Highly recommended.
