Hi everyone. I literally just downloaded vdj yesterday, hence i'm insanely new to this. There was probably a thread addressing this already (if so could you please direct me too it) and if not, now there is.
What is the best type of video file to play in vdj? I'm looking for that perfect amount of compression to save space without loosing too much quality. All recommendations will be appreciated.

If you MUST compress video files - use MPG1
From experience - I'll give you some advice...Don't bother compressing. I only have 3 file versions of videos on my hard drive - MPG1, MPG2, VOB(which is the same as MPG2), and mp4 from itunes.
For around 100.00 CDN you can get a 1TB harddrive and leave all you videos on there in uncompressed file format and they will look and sound 100 times better than compressed files. You might not notice it at home - but on any type of decent sound system you will notice the difference straight away.
There's nothing more embarrassing than a poor looking video and hissy sound

there are a few formats you can now choose from, me personally have used mpg2 for quite sometime now, as the price of space is quite cheap now for external hard drives.
if you need anything for clipbank drop me a pm...

Depends on your computer. If you can decode H.264 with no problems that's the best codec for quality/size, if not, then you could try XviD. If neither give you acceptable performance your best bet is MPEG2 (which is still a compressed format).
Another factor is your source. If you're downloading videos from iTunes they will be H.264. If you use a mail order service like Promo Only it's best to rip the files directly as MPEG2 (with no recompression), these are just over 200MB each. You could losslessly reduce the filesize by about 15-20MB per video by changing the audio to Apple Lossless or FLAC and using an MKV container but this is a little advanced and Virtual DJ's MKV support is sometimes flaky. Obviously if you're used to playing compressed audio you could save even more space (about 30-40MB per video) by using 256kb AAC files or equivalent (this is how iTunes encode their audio).
A properly encoded 50-60MB H.264/AAC (MP4) file will give you very good quality but at the expense of CPU. MPEG2 is the safest format to use if you're unsure.

If you are looking to save space I assume you are a Laptop user. (My favorite people)
90% of my videos are MEPG2 and I don't have any crashing issues. For some reason no one can quite figure out a LOT of people have problems when they start mixing video formats, the forum is full of these type complaints.
I played around with H.264 (with Andrews help) and the videos did came out very good but at the "end of the day" it's not worth the hassle for me to decode them.
If you are not limited in drive space my recommendation is stick with one format, MPEG2 is possible.

I currently rip all of my dvds as vob files and it currently takes up 2 TB. Never have had a problem and the quality is superb. Also, CPU usage is low. The more you compress the video files the more the CPU is used to uncompress the files. Promo Only is starting to release their videos in mp4 format.
Basically with hard drive space so cheap why compress the video files. Also it takes a lot of time to compress them.

I edit from AVI/AVI Huffy and VOB - I encode to MP4 H.264/AAC – on the video I go with a high VBR preset, 2 pass. For Audio I use 512kbps.
MP4 can produce great results, although you can’t surpass the quality of your source material, an MP4 can be of greater quality than a DVD because a DVD video also originated from a file, and has also been processed…which doesn’t always result in a great looking video.
I’ve got 40-50mb MP4’s from itunes on which look better than some of my 200mb+ VOBs.
One of the main points with video is to replace the audio - music videos aren't tailored for DJ's hence the intros/outro's/background noise/crazy moments/quiet audio in general.
This is one of the main reasons why Smashvidz is so popular, they save you the time, tools and talent.
