Topic: Anyone still using Rotary Mixers ? - Page: 3

This part of topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information

I'm wondering why the new mixers have line faders and the cros fader instead of these rotary mixers ?

And whats the difference when mixing with that kind of mixer ?

Thank you and I'm waiting to see the result of your work.

Pern,
I'm digging your designs. Would you consider a 19", rackable design?

Yes, i will. After i built the Desktop version i will start on the 19" version. I will be a "traditional" (Bozak/UREI) design but built in modules . It will also have an "extension box" so that you can have things like 3-band EQ, X-Fader, MIC amp with EQ. VU/PEAK meters etc...

The front of it will look about 98% like Bozak AR-6 :

Pern,

I've owned an original Urei 1620, Bozak CMA10-2DL, Numark MMX 2000 and 1000.

This is my home setup:

Is that a RANE ? How is it compared to UREI/BOZAK ?

I really doesn't like how RANE design there mixers (Not the functionality but schematics). I prefer the Bozak/Urei "less is more" designs. Like put as little components in the signal paths as possible since they will affect the sound. RANE has a "More is more" approach.

I agree with you.
The Bozak and Urei mixers where designed to be very easy to work on with a minimal amount of components for more of a reference sound.

But Rane mixers do sound really good. They reproduce CD and MP3s extremely well. Their Phono stages don't really sound that good. That is why I use outboard/external phono preamps with my Rane mixer.

Don't get me wrong: the phono stage of a Rane MP2016A will beat any overpriced Vestax, Numark or Stanton phono stage.
It's just not as good as a Bozak or the original Urei.

RANE use a 1 OP Amp RIAA solution and UREI the Classic 2 OP. I have always used the 2 OP myself, think it sounds much better.

Hey Pern, is the mixer your building going to be midi compatible too? I think that is the biggest knock on most mixers used with VDJ, they are not midi.

Not the first ones. Also when i do a MIDI mixer i have to do a complete different design so i can't re-use any of the current schematics.

These first 2 ones are more about classic mixer sound and functionality than modern features like MIDI ;-) I will do the first 2 ones with 2 options: "Classic sound" and "Audiophile version", in the later all components that affect sound quality are changed to really HQ ones.

While designing the PCB i noticed that i need the space at top for input connectors at the rear, so i moved the LEDs. I also added an extra CUE - HOUSE switch for the LEDs so there are now one per LED channel. so the LEDs can now show CUE (Stereo), HOUSE (Stereo), or one CUE (MONO) an the the other HOUSE (MONO).

I also changed the source select function. PHONO 1 + 2 + MIC are now fixed, but i added PREAMP select. So if you don't use PHONO or MIC you can also use the connectors as extra AUX (Line) inputs.

Personally I prefer this LED set up to the previous one Pern..looking good

I have also learned more about what components UREI used in the original 1620. So when building it there are 3 options depending on what "sound" you want.

- 1620, Early 80's models

- 1620, Late 80's models

- Audiophile (Modern, High-grade components)

Pern, where do you find those big knobs?

There is a lot on Ebay. But i also buy at www.farnell.com etc...

** Status Update **

I have had a lot of suggestions etc on the design and i have now updated it to something that i think is what a lot of people could use. One of the biggest request was to add a third PHONO input, so that is added. The source select is changed to better work with the design also. And i have moved the MIC vol to the front also. Master/EQ/HP location on the top is also changed.

Specs at the moment are:

INPUTS:
------------
- 1 MIC (Balanced)
- 3 PHONO
- 3 ( 6 ) AUX

OUTPUTS:
--------------
- HOUSE (Balanced / Unbalanced - selected via switch in the rear)
- Booth
- Tape
- FX Loop In-Out

This is how it looks now:

Front:

Rear:

And here is the FRONT option with MIC EQ etc:

* Status update *

Made some changes in functionality.

- Balance function removed but it's very easy to add for people who wants it.

- CUE function changed to switches. There is also a CUE summing bus added.
So if you want more input channels it's very easy to add them.

- LEDs removed an nice VU-meters added, i finaly found some nice ones at a good price.

Components ordered and PCB design in progress.

wonderful work

Yep, sure is

I really like the design also now, just what you need. Nothing more.

When this is finished i will do 2 "small" projects in the same style and box as the this mixer.

- 3 band Isolator. To use in the FX loop.
- MIDI Controller. Single units so you need 2. One on each side of the mixer.

But these 2 are not just for this mixer, they can be used with any.

And that will also be my new home set-up ;-)

Looks very interesting for sure ;)
