Topic: Key Detection.....Always a minor key?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

The new key detection is a great feature for harmonic beat mixing but I am using it for Karaoke to determine the correct key to accompany singers with my Blues Harp. Is there a way to calibrate the detection software so it identifies the correct key? Initial trials have indicated that I do not own a song that is in a Major key, always Minor and at least 2 steps off.

TIA

Your observations as for VDJ 5.1 are correct and for why was an obviously broken feature released idk.

I've heard there's a free program that does better job for getting the correct key but I've not tried yet as it requires to install Java. It's called Rapid Evolution and available from mixshare dot com. If you try it please let us know if the detection is better.

Yeah! please let us know Mrtim or someone that use the Camelot EasyMix System...
i'm new on this of HarmonicMixing but i have analyzed the circle of Camelot and i see that vdj analyzes it wrong :(

I'm new to it too, but let me ask this:

If it's consistantly wrong, so what? If everything is 2 off, so what?

Thats exactly it.. Or using the words from Mixed In Key :
- As long as you use one system for the key analyze, it will be harmonically correct, even if the keys are analyzed from different spectrums of the song, or given weight to different parts.

So, use Mixmeister OR VirtualDJ OR MixedInKeys..

So far though, VirtualDJ seems the better from my checkings..

Still Rune... I only have about 2500 tracks, but they are all *A, i don't have one *B... That's not normal, is it? :\

"normal" ... hard to define. Whats normal? In software key detection, the industry leader MixMeister also detects only minor keys.. (A's).

But hopefully VDJ will grow past that stage, although it works well using minor key detection, as long as its done within one software (Mixmeister or VDJ)..

its also true with the trend in music, since no one can sing, things are recorded in minor and flat its just part of the studio magic :) It was once thought by symphony composers not to play to much minor or risk being burrned at the stake hehe.. Look how far we've come.

minor or flat? I think some singers today have discovered a whole new spectrum of keys!

the other thing to remember is that each major key has a relative minor and I assume VDJ lists the relative minor for each track in a major key.

Although I have to confess I havnt checked this out.

A relative minor chord is in every major key. 80% of western pop music uses a 1,4,5 major chord and a relative minor (7th) chord. You would think discovery of a standard 1,4,5, chord progression shouldn't that tough to nail down. The reason I need the correct key is that I play Blues Harmonica. Each harp is a single key so I have to choose the correct one to play for each song. I have started harmonic beat mixing using VDJ and the key indicator seems to work relative to the other songs so it is a good tool to have, just not accurate.

I'll look into the other programs.

Thanks

hehe, for some reason this reminds me of the scene from Cannibal The Musical after the Trapper Song;^]

Any chance of getting to detect major keys?

That video sums up harmonic mixing very well! (Just watch the last minute).

Here is what the manuel says....

Part of the BPM Engine is also a Key Detection Engine. Determining the ‘musical key’ of a track allows for the ability to harmonically mix tracks that necessarily would not typically be mixed together. However, because the two tracks harmonically blend, the mix can sound clean and be pleasing to the ear. Harmonic mixing or “Mixed in Key” is the base for modern Mash-up style tracks. The Key Detection Engine strongly favors minor keys, as most songs played by DJs are in minor key. But if the key is strongly major, it'll still be reported as a major.

You dug up an almost two year old post to quote the manual?
