Topic: Instant resizable skin (vector based) for VDJ and Cue

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I use Virtual Vinyl from Numark, and the skins made by the users do not work for me... :-S. I get always errors in the skins (possibly caused by the obliged logo that doesn't match the VDJ one)

This gives me a serious problem. I can't find/use any skin of size 1440*900 for my laptop, and 1680*1050 for my desktop. I need to use other (smaller) sizes. Maximized they give a blurry effect, and that's not funny to use.
That's probably the most negative point I can find on this software.

So what I would like to see is, a vector based skin (like in torq) that fits all screen sizes, and gives an optimum result for everyone.

Everyone I know that uses VDJ always complains about the skin re sizing thing.

yeah guys i agree with you it is a pain, but lets not forget these skins are made by some talented folk for our benefit and totally at no cost to ourselves... my thought for the day

I'm sure if you asked on the forum, someone would make a skin in the right resolution for you - I know it's not a fix (like using vector graphics) but at least it'll get you working better - I had the same issue, so I made myself a skin that was 1920xsomething-less-than-1200-so-it-still-shows-the-start-bar as I don't run fullscreen.

Regards,

Scott

I have the right size skin but it still does it.

Still does what - complain (but works fine anyway) or resizes and makes it fuzzy?

I've had a similar idea, and posted a few months back.

Have a Skin resizer in the Skin tab of VirtualDJ config,

When you choose what skin you want to use, you then could choose, in what size you want it, so it fit's your screen perfect. VirtualDJ would than alter the skin to fit.

Also it would stop users saying to the skin makers, can I have the skin in this size and that size.

For the resizing problem, it should be solved now because a Skin Resizer Tool has been released: http://www.virtualdj.com/addons/tools.html
Alot of new options should come soon.

But i do agree that vector based graphics would be great.
I might work on one this summer.

As my Skin Resizer Tool can change the XML automatically, i could use photoshop to resize the vector graphics and it won't get blurry.

what is this vector graphics, I'm reading. Me not know.

A bitmap is a series of dots. to resize you have to double the amount of dots which makes things look pixelated (fuzzy?). a vector is a mathmatecal calculation of start, end and curvature of lines. so when it's resized it looks exactly same with same detail, just bigger.

Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, etc are vector-based programs as opposed to Paint or Photoshop (although photoshop can render a vector to a bitmapt easily enough). It would be great to do this and would probably make the software a little lighter. It also means that creating skins is harder and probably more work. But since it's not an easy thing to do in the first place, this seems like a good idea. Problem is that you cant make everything as a vector, you still need bitmaps so you need a mixed format. Im pretty sure this would be unavoidable. Making a vector to replace certain shaded effects if very time intensive and would make the rendering of VDJ when you run it much slower than a bitmap.

There are obious pros and cons to this. Personally, Im fine with VDJ skins as they are now. What I would like to see is that the track browser becomes resizable since its a fairly basic operation.

The best thing to do for the moment would be to make the graphics in vector for any new skins. When the graphics are finished, the skin maker renders the picture in the size and width he wants in bitmap.
Then he makes the XML

And when uploading skins to this website, the skin maker includes the vector graphics, so everybody who knows how to use them, can make bigger skins, and use my skin resizer to change the XML and match the new size.
If i have time this summer, i'll try to take one of DJ FORMAT's skins (surely Mix Lab) and make it a vector graphic.

Good old Paz, saves the Day..hehe

Thanks Guys, I'm happy now I know :)

For what it's worth, I think this is a GREAT idea!
