Topic: Can you be a DJ and a family man?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I'll start 1st by saying that DJing for me, although a source of income, is not my my primary job, it is my secondary.

I live with me girlfreind and her two children (6 & 9)

I find it very hard finding the time to dedicate to doing the stuff a DJ need to do. (testing, organising, experimenting etc)
The kids, as most kids are, need a lot of attention and interaction. By the time they're in bed and i've done all the other bits i need to do, it's normally around 10:30pm. By then i'm just not mentally fresh enough to embark on the DJing stuff i need to do... too drained from the days exploits!.... Not to mention the fact that audio volumes have to be at a minimun as certain little people are sleeping!

Weekends are family time too and the kids stay up even later.

So, any tips on how to juggle the family life and the life of a DJ?

I can only imagine, it's tricky enough for me juggling my testing and such with my time spent at the clubhouse & that's only a few days a week. What kind of speakers do you use at home? I usualy do my main systems tests without the PA and just use my fostex pm.04 near field monitors. I turn them up pretty loud and can barely hear them outside my door, even though it's very loud in my room;^]

Just a idea, to kill a bird with one stone as the saying goes,

Why don't you start learning the your kids the art of DJ'ing if you got a home set up, this way you can have time do do all the DJ'ing stuff and still spending quality time with your kiddies. You never know they might take to it. or you might get the most famous kid's saying in the world

" DAD I'M BORED "

Quit your day job. That worked for me for 17 years.
After 17 years, I finally took my DJing down to 1 night a week and got a day job. However, my kids (old enough now) never spent a single day in day care, they were home raised by me while my wife had a day job.
at my peak I was djing 7 gigs a week, 8 if I had a private event that week.
Now I'm sort of winding down the dj thing, and thinking about saving enough money to retire.
The once a week gig keeps my hands in it, but doesn't take up nearly the time of doing it full time. Plus the current weekly gig is 70-80's only, so I don't have to be constantly making sure I have the latest and greatest tunes. That probably took up the most time durring my busiest years.

I have a daughter that is 2 and a son that is 7 so i know where your coming from. DJing isnt my main source of income and time is very limited. I have managed to get my kids into bed earlier they go to bed around 8:30-9:00 then I spend a little time with wifey till about 10 or 10:30. Then its my time until about 12. Only an hour and a half but its time to organize some of my new music turn the tables on very low which isnt fun and do a little something. I have been thru the whole you dont spend enough time with me from the wifey and all to know put the time in with the family first always. DJing will allows be there the family want. I have plenty of times im so beat that i have put off doing anything dj related but every now and then the drive kicks in and I make myself find the time.

Two girls, one 14 one 18.
Have a full time boat dealership running my life m-f.
After that every waking minute here or in the studio.
In the summer I take the family on the road weekends doing camping resorts all over New England.

When I have to work a private gig, I always take momma out on the other night.

If you ignore your family you will lose them, so work harder at both and keep it together.
Other gigs will come along, families do not.

I know a lot of DJs that have families. We got a famous one down here in South Florida (DJ Laz). He's married and with kids. Don't know how he does it, he's around a lot of females and when you see videos of him on Power 96, he's always flirting with them, but he has to keep his image... I guess it goes to show as long as you ain't having sex with them.... it's all about T R U S T. The only marital I've heard with DJs, it's not with the strange hours, but with CHEATING.

That is my biggest problem. Me and wife both have a full time job with 4 children and lots of family issues that come with that. Right now I am not in a position in my life to be stuck in a club with all the club-life enviroment while trying to maintain a happy healhty family. And yes the family must ALWAYS be first in your life because everything else is fleeting.
