What version of Windows are you using?
I have had some problems using skins that are zipped.. Try extracting the 2 files to the skins folder and load them from there. I am using (gonna get stick for admitting this) XP MCE

I am using Media Centre XP, which can cause problems,
If you look in your skins folder there are .zip files. If you open these files they contain a .bmp and a .xml file. Copy these two files and paste them to the skins directory, then you can select them from your skins list in virtual - you will notice they look slightly different..
instead of:
eg
ZIPNAME:SKIN_NAME
you should now also see
SKIN_NAME

tried delting the skin and replacing it with another?

sounds like the default skin may be corrupted. Might be an idea to either download the default skin again or re-install Virtual.
Virtual always defaults back to the original skin, but if there is corruption there and it cannot load the default skin................................... :'(

Strange, this error is when you have bad closed TAGS or something on the XML file of our skin.
As you said you've tried to change skin, do what others tols, unistall completely the software.
