Hello!
I have huge problems getting VDJ 4.1 to work on my new laptop. First the Specs of my system:
DELL Inspiron 9400
Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 2.0 GHz
2048 MB DDR2 SDRAM, 533MHz
120GB HD 5400rpm
USB 2.0 Ports
ESI U46DJ Soundcard - Driver Version 1.0.18
The problems start when I use the KEYLOCK feature. Then I get crackles and it sounds just ugly. Without the Keylock, both decks sound ok (but not as rock solid as VDJ 3.x did).
The quality settings in VDJ are set to best quality, but even with a high latency (512 and higher) it sounds terrible. Changing the Safe Mode and Overclock settings didn't change anything.
The CPU Meter in the Video Skin and the Windows task manager goes up to max. 60%. It seems not to be a overload problem.
The laptop has a fresh installed Win XP Pro on it, nothing else (not the Dell installation).
I know that Dell laptops seems not to be the first choice for VDJing, but with this configuration it should have more than enough power for the VDJ program...?
Did I miss something? Does anybody have an idea how I can get VDJ to work on this system?
Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much!

Ok you take it from me. I know what I am talking about here. I have Core 2 Duo but desktop.
Dual-Core is powerful don't get me wrong. But it's still not powerful enough to run the keylock feature at best quility. I have noticed if you change scratch to simple algorithm it may tend to take the heat of and usually works. Please also note that it is a new feature and is still in the works, I dont think all the bugs have been sussed out yet. You may think it is easy but this task would be a very complex one to making this feature working 100%.
Secondly do not use beta drivers. Using beta drivers for the U46DJ is not recommended. Usually beta versions are ONLY for different versions of the actual ESI unit. Possibly a different serial or totally different chipset altogether. I suggest you read the ESI driver in the hardware technical support forums. Depending on your serial number you should either use 1.0.16 or .14 depending on which serial number you have. May I also bring to your attention that using beta drivers on an incorrect unit and with the wrong firmware is also dangerous and I don't think you are covered under warranty if you do such a thing.
I have the version .19 which is a final version. this is using the chipset of the one that is allegidly going into the numark box then you will be able to run .19 final. .19 final(like me) will only work with a certain chipset and firmware. I beleive they are still trying to create a firmware flash for the old chipset(so far unsucessful) to enable it to run the .19 drivers. As of yet I think they have had no luck. I beleive that no drivers will be available for the old chipset untill vista comes out and that should be .17 i think.

Thank you skyflx and DJKice for your response.
Of course I'm aware of that. V4.1 is a big step forward in functionality, so the new features have to be optimized and tweeked. I work in the SW business myself, so I know how hard this job is...
Hopefully the VDJTeam is planning a dual core version of VDJ. One deck per processor, I think this would be perfect... :-)
I have checked the ESI driver thread before installing. My D46DJ is brand new (Serial starting with ESJ060*), so the 1.0.18 driver should work with my unit. I tried out the 1.0.16, but with it the crackles have been even worse...
So far it seams that the only thing I can do is fiddeling with the VDJ performance settings. When I change the scratch mode to simple, doesn't it cut down the sound quality below the VDJ 3.x level?

I have intel core duo in my new laptop. It works with all setings. I have always at best quality and it works without problems.
Intel core duo processor is powerful enough. More important is ram. I have 4 GB in my laptop (i am testing it for one computer shop). You actually can't find laptop that has 4GB of ram :)
It works perfect with 2GB too.
All depends of windows. Try to optimize it.

Thank you xeon for your post.
What type of processor (Speed) do you have in your laptop?
Do you have some special tips where I can start to tweak my windows? I have a fresh installed XP Pro with SP2 - nothing else on it.
Of course I have to go thru the performance thread in the General Discussion forum, but perhaps you can give me some additional hints?

ok first of all I cannot give you my version of drivers. simply because it is for my chipset only. 060 isnt the chipset and is sadly one of the older chipsets. 060 should use .16 drivers not the beta .18. To use the beta you would need a newer unit which is in testing using the TEST firmware. Your device doesnt have that specific firmware so you simply cant use it. Also using .18 which i stated above is not covered by warranty if anything to were to go wrong because it is not designed for the chipset which you have, only for the ones which esi use for testing. My .19 is for a higer chipset and firmware, supposidly the one which is going to be released in the numark box. as I stated before no driver update is available yet and may not be until vista is released. there is no way of flashing the firmware atm they have tried and it has been unsuccessful, the newer chipset is designed differently that is why.
I am telling you just disable and dont use keylock or disable scratch quility... thats your two options. you cant have everything. and I know I have been testing it for weeks... I am even using a more poreful system than you and i still cant run both of them together.
6800 extreme edition c2d
4gb of 800mhz corsair low latency ram
150gb raptor etc..
even with my M-Audio Delta 44 i cant run both features together. it could be software related.... as the feature is still new. be patient should be corrected in future versions.

I tried Intel Pentium D 915 2.8Ghz Dual Core with 4Mb cache and 1Gb ram, tried audio only, setting was on the highest preset in performance, I played both decks with keylock on and pitched them, than I was analyzing tracks with Any Music engine and the peak on CPU was 76%! Everything was playing just well. So, don't say dual core can't work with VDJ. Didn't had the time to try video, will post later.
