Topic: which laptop? Amd Turion 64 okay W 1gb ram?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I am considering a new laptop purchase, mainly to be used as a system for mobile djing.. I thought I might a get a centrino duo 1.6ghz model with 2gb of ram.. found one at best buy for likt $1200... This one does not have a separate video card, but being shared with 2gb of ram, perhaps it could od the video mixing with virtual dj?

Then I found this laptop on sale at compusa.. it's half the price (which means 2 laptopns instead of one to me) - it has amd Turion 64 mobile technlogy and 1 GB of ram.. good enough??

Anyone have any problems with any of these set ups.. or any good experiences?

I have both the mkii and the udj46 and want a stable strong system that will not crash...

Comments appreciated!

PS Of course if a video card is neccessary to do the video, (not that I NEED to do vide mixing right yet).. should I consider this one for $1000 that uses the turion with 1gb of ram : http://tinyurl.com/g38p3

(It has nvidia chipset - but I think the memory is shared :(

does the hard drive speeed impace virtual dj? (4200 rpm, 5400 rpm, 7200 rpm) and does it make any difference if I am going to using an external firewire drive?

or maybe this one with a geforce ro 700..

None of these have a good graphics card. I don't recommend you any of these. I will check to give an option.

I found Hp Pavilion dv9000t or dv8000t series good.

You must be aware of the videocard type, N-Vidia GeForce GO 7600 it's a minimum option. I highly recommend you an N-Vidia GT series. Could be GeForce GO 7600GT or 7900GT. In notebooks I saw that is easier to find ATI X1400 or X1600 videocards on notebooks. These 2 works fine with VDJ Video capabilities.

Good Luck!

THANK YOU! for the advice!

The best price / value I have been able to find on an ati x1600 notebook is at directron:
http://www.directron.com/as5672wlmiati.html
On an Acer moel.

Some reviews I found around the web say that acer is quality, it's uner $1200 online. So this one with these specs will run vdj and video mix with no hiccups?

I currently use a firewire ieee / usb2 combo drive to pull music into atomix on an old gateway. (my new (used) dell just fried ;()

I have seen some notebook / laptops being advertised with "windows media center" edition as the os.. should this be fine with vdj? (had not seen anything in the minumum sys req about it)

The Hp 9000t that I found online only has 512mb of ram.. this is okay?

if I got the Turion 64, is that plenty of power? Or should I bee looking for duo core (even though the dou core's actual speed is half that of the reccomended system requirements, it is my understanding that a 1.6ghz duo is like having a 3.2 ghz p4??)

If I got the cheaper one listed above
(( http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=337642&pfp=hpf1 ) )

Would this be fine for running vdj if I did not do video?

Your help is seriously appreciated!

So I checked out the so called 700$ special, which is actually like $1100 minues instant savings and whatevr and a $200 rebate.. so I would still be paying state tax of almost 10% on $1000, and ending up spending like 900 anyway, so I started looking close at this Acer they had on the shelf:

http://tinyurl.com/owyg6

It has 2GB of ram, it's about $1000, and it has an ATI 128mb Radeon Xpress 1100

Perhaps this will be able to handle video mixing with virtual dj?

I wonder if it will handle regular music video length videos, but choke on larger vids? I had a friend say that larger video files caused his virtual dj 3.x crash whenever he loaded video files that were quite large, like 30 minute videos...

If anyonw would elaborate on this I would appreciate it!

While at the computer shop I picke dup a new hard drive for the used ell I had and replaced that tonight.. going through hell reintsalling drivers, but I may try to use this with the udj46 this weekend.. it meets the minimum requirements on the software page.. perhpas it won't skip or crash...
