Guess it depends who is paying him the most.

Yes he says he's biased. And still, his choices don't make sense..
I mean, at least try to be a little consistent..

TBH: In my personal point of view, all these guys forgot their roots. They forgot how they got where they are today. They don't really care for the average dj anymore. They don't try to give real and useful advise to the average dj. Instead they try to produce YouTube content and sell a product/service and/or image.
That's why they say a lot without actually saying anything really useful.
It's more or less like reading a Chat GPT script at this point..

exactly thats the thing i thought....
he is rating controller based on what software they use...
I he wanted to be a bit more consistent at least he would check all of the controllers with vdj!!
but in the end its all about the money... ;)

Oh come on..
I saw a YouTube video from Mojaxx recently rating DJ controllers..
And I'm like, really?

Lmao!! Well its his "opinion" and he clearly states that lol!!

Does anyone really care for Phil's opinion? Dudes been out of touch for a while now. He's always been a serato n.uthugger. I was a Serato user for nearly 10 years, even had an sl1 scratch live, but after switching to VDJ, there was no turning back.

Many DJs look towards those platforms to make decisions/know what to accept, and that by itself, is not a problem.
The problem is 1) their objectivity has long been (provably imo) compromised, and as a result the content they produce only fits a certain narrative, and 2) (the bigger problem imo) persons tend to wholly depend on them for knowing what's what in the industry, and as a result they won't call them out on biases/or think objectively about the offering on their own.
Because the number of ppl calling them out is way less than those who support them, they can now easily ignore potentially valid points, dismissing the person as "fanboy" or "a loyal user" or "always stirring up trouble" and point at the larger crowd, implying you are an outsider (why listen to you?)

Having purchased a Denon Prime Go+ last year I have to say that his reviews towards Denon and especially Engine are far too positive. I have had many issues especially with the desktop software and also on the player itself. People report bugs on the forum but no-one from Denon even replies.

I reported a bug where the preview player re-enables on every boot in December. It was acknowledged and sent to the dev team. No fix was in the latest player firmware.

It's a frustrating platform to use with many basic features still missing after years of user requests but he always makes it out to be far better than it is in my opinion.

BUT one thing I will say is that the Engine interface is pretty much perfect for using with the touch screen. The VDJ implementation isn't even close and can't be easily used without interaction on the laptop.

I wouldn't say that "basic features" are missing. There are plenty of people using the Prime series (and the more recent Numarks) on a daily basis. Yes, many things have been requested by users over the years that have yet to be implemented (and possibly never will be) but these are not things that prevent the user from DJing. Whilst you claim to have had "many issues" I have had very few, either with the desktop software or the standalone OS.

Many users can no longer vote for things on the forum simply because all their points have been used on ancient requests (and would only be returned should the request be granted).

As for the GUI, I actually prefer the VDJ skin to the default Denon standalone GUI, which IMO is getting worse as time goes by.

Yeah Im with Groovin on that. Engine has been rock solid for me. Never had any issues other then the grid missing the first down beat on more tracks then Id like to admit. But as a whole, its been great for me.

Engine is a great platform, but how could you possibly place the Prime GO+ (a niche mobile device) over devices like the DDJ-XZ/AZ (basically can do everything/serves more types of DJs) overall/considering all styles of DJing?

I guess because of the uniqueness of it, compared to the more generic/ubiquitous units. It's a common complaint that DJ booths don't have room for the more generously proportioned units, especially if you have to squeeze a computer in too - so a nice small self contained unit fits the bill. People buy them as second unit/backup devices too.

If that's the case...why did he place the Omnis Duo in the C tier?

I'm not trying to spark confusion, but I think the list is all over the place thoughtwise (I respect he has his views though).

I've also personally never seen a Denon Prime GO+ in a booth in my area (installed or brought in)- most DJs use what the booth provides (CDJs definitely, or CDJ-like/Pioneer controller). I've seen the Denon Prime GO at weddings and corporate functions, especially when multiple setups are needed (ceremony in one area, reception a good distance from that).

He put his points across in the video...

The thing got ripped apart in the online comments when it was revealed (it's too expensive, it's blue etc.), and it does have some weird operational quirks e.g. you can't change the track key.

When you present yourself as a professional on a subject, then you need to set your personal preferences on the side.

So, when you are a professional dj gear reviewer, you can't put out a video solely based on your personal preferences. People expect your professional (and not your personal) opinion. Even when you say that these are my personal preferences, people ignore it because they have connected you with your professional persona and treat everything as such.

I can understand that sometimes it's not easy to do. But it's not hard either. I myself find it difficult quite a few times to resist writing some funny/strange/trolling comments on these forums. :P
I have to always keep in mind and remind myself that while I'm not an official representative of Atomix, anything I can say can be treated eventually as such.
Therefore I have to be very careful on the public opinions I present on these forums, not only for VirtualDJ (obviously) but for any other matter as well (e.g. DJ Controllers / Laptops e.t.c.)
I'm mostly a Windows user for instance. I cannot and should not come on these forums and bash MAC OS on every chance just because I prefer Windows. Nor should I ignore MAC OS users and posts / requests for help all together. Finally, as a professional user that knows the strengths and weaknesses of both OS, I should not even encourage a debate Windows VS MAC OS.

Same rule SHOULD apply for all these "professional" reviewers. In My Honest Opinion, they should know better, and treat their audience with more respect, by keeping their personal likings aside as much as humanly possible..

@PhantomDeejay I agree 100% that they should try to remain as objective as possible and in most videos they are (that one video ranking controllers was especially bad, but the topic itself was not objective to begin with (ranking controllers and no obvious criterion?)), but when the channel's bread and butter is reviewing DJ various company's software/hardware offerings and those same companies are sending you gear/flying you out to get first looks at software, it's hard to expect complete objectivity, especially if that software/hardware maker is dominant in the field/well financed.

@groovindj I think the Omnis Duo got ripped because of the company name change/branding (which is really weird to me because it reflects nothing functionalitywise), it's build quality, not having streaming services (at the time) and its price (the proprietary SonicLink inclusion was curious to me too). However, it largely gives the same core functionality as the Prime Go.
I don't own nor have I used either, but at face value they seem like they both offer enough to do a mobile job well.

It was only "bad" to you guys because it doesn't fit your narrative lol!!

We all use these systems in different ways, and we all have different opinions about what's good or what ranks higher.

Yall are putting waaaaaaaaaaaay to much thought into something that was meant to be fun.

He stated it was for fun and it was his "opinions", that alone should tell you everything you need to know and maybe just maybe he did all of this for the "views".

Yall gotta relax, this was never about Mojaxx in the first place, stop letting people like Phil keep knocking VDJ because of weak ass things like the NAME!! The name has NOTHING to do with the functionality of the software, and we all know how good this software is. Go flame Phil and let Mojaxx have his fun....

The best laugh for me is chatting to local guys using cracked V7 and telling them everything the current version does. Fruitless though as they just won't move on. A mix of fear to change and actually having to pay for something.

They don't realise how much better an experience it would be for their customers with all the features introduced 11 years ago onwards.

LOL I've just spotted that Phil is now doing a "Best VirtualDJ Controllers" stream...

Without looking the FLX10 will win that hands down.

Apparently he asked the VDJ team...

Here's the stream -> Stream

Here's the web page with the results:

@groovindj I think Phil did make that article itself a week ago or so but kudos to him to actually giving some airtime to the Software - I hope they really do bring out an updated version of the course.

@thesoundinsurgent I get it...you look up to Mojaxx, and that's cool, but saying that we have an "agenda" against him, after reading all of the points actually brought up is confusing/a little amusing.

Simply put, his latest controller video has points that he uses for one set of controllers that he later contradicts himself for others of similar types.
The best example would be the DDJ-1000[SRT] vs all the other Pioneer 4 channel controllers that came before it - they all have separate versions made for Serato (S versions) and Rekordbox (R versions) but he made that a big issue for the DDJ-1000 variants (dropping them to the lowest tier just because of that), which makes no sense at least to me at first glance.
What he probably wanted to say (but probably knows it would have shown a bias), is that for that particular pair (DDJ-1000 and SRT):

  • That release was probably one of the first times that when they staggered their releases, they brought out the Rekordbox version first with no immediate indication of a Serato version
  • That was the first controller type to follow the club setup layout, and include CDJ like jog wheels, which some users of the older controllers were hoping for
  • The Rekordbox version had better jog displays than the Serato version
  • Serato first users (probably him included) didn't like that because they were accustomed to Serato being the preferred platform by Pioneer

There is no agenda against these dj content making platforms really - that is the kind of deflection they themselves, or others, use to try to take attention away from the point being made. We can like what they bring out, but we can also be honest about what we see (or don't see) happening and still not hate/have something against them 🤷🏾‍♂️
