The connecting really has nothing to do with your license - that comes a little later
You should be able to get the controller up and running with VDJ for 10 min without any license (test period)
One thing it could be is that your OS has "taken over" the controllers soundcard as it's default soundcard
Another thing could be if your VDJ is really old - support for the SB3 was added in VDJ8 BUILD 4204 (spring 2018)

I seen this cause I just ran into the same issue.
Come to find out my front ports are USB2.0 and they lag/crash me. I swapped to the USB3.0 in the back and were cruisin just fine
