Topic: MP3 tagging issues - Page: 1

This part of topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information

Unlike most other DJ software, I really like the flexibility of the browser section on VD8. However I've run into numerous mp3 tagging issues critical to my song selection, and I can't seem to find a work around. Using MP3tag, I have confirmed proper tagging and consistency by verifying the tags in Windows Explorer. However this does not (always) get transferred to the VDJ8.1 browser folders. Specifically, on ratings and tracks tags, they randomly show up and then disappear for no reason. Other tags seem to drop or get reset back to original. Running 'Recurse' or 'Reload Tags' operation does not help.
I also have 2 laptops with VDJ8.1 setup identical with identical music folders. On one laptop, some of the tags look correct. If I copy the parent song folders from this laptop to the other laptop, the correct tags drop to default value. However in Windows Explore, the tags in question display correctly, confirming the transferred music files contain accurate tags. But not in VDJ8.1 Very strange. It does not seem to matter what version Windows. Same problem on both Win7 and Win10.

I think there is more to this issue besides those mentioned in your post. For example, I already had MP3tag setup to write ID3v2.3 and problems still persists with BPM, where clearly this should work. It really shouldn't be this tedious and problematic, particularly for common music tags.

When creating tags for a new music files, this appears to work better vs modifying tags for existing files whose tags have already been modified. I also would expect windows to be picky about reading tags, but I'm seeing just the opposite.

Do you know which version of ID3v2.3 UTF16 or ISO-8859-1 works better?

i am using UTF-16 without any issues and i also use mp3tag regularly all i ever need to do is a batch reload of tags and all works properly.

If you rely heavingly on the tags themselves then you should enable the following options on VirtualDj:
GetTagsAuto
SetTagsAuto
GetTitleFromTags
GetCommentsFromTags
GetRatingFromTags

If all the above options are enabled you shouldn't experience any issues.

Ok, my issue is fixed. Once I changed these settings all my tags started working across all files.
Simple fix yet worth noting, some of these settings are not the defaulted to enabled state on fresh install. This is something I should have noticed before posting. I'll definitely read over the Settings Description section in the Users Guide.

A BIG Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! And thanks to Wickedmix for the info on tag writing, use ID3v2.3 UTF16

Thanks for all the info on tag issues. Main one I experienced was moving to a new system and I thought I had lost all my rating tags from my music stored on external HD. The other tags (the ones linked to MP3's) were there but because Ratings are only stored on the VDJ database on the original computer so just had to transfer the database XML file across and all sorted. That save me long nights of work! I Through researching this problem I now realise:
1. Better not to store info fields like Comment 2 etc not stored in an MP3
2. Develop a separate rating system not dependent on the VDJ DB that will come up on a search. Something like R1 or R5 before the details entered in Comment field

Just FYI:
Ratings are not stored only on VirtualDj database. Ratings are also written on the tags if you enable the setTagsauto option or if you press the "Write Tag" button on VirtualDj's Tag Editor when you edit the info of your files.

I have an issue witn the Tag-Editor / the ratings as well, i used the editor to rate the files.
All Tag Options are set to yes / auto.
Usually i pressed next an the rating was written to the file, but since a few upadtes it doesn't work anymore. The Rating is just saved in VDJ.
VDJ writes only the rating tag into the file tag when I press "OK", but then the Tag Editor window gets closed and my workflow is gone.
Can you please fix this issue?

My Settings:
readOnly: no
getTagsAuto: yes
setTagsAuto: yes
getTitleFromTags: yes
getCommentFromTags: yes
getCuesFromTags: for new files
getTagFromZip: yes
useKeyFromTag: no

btw: I have no Button which says "Write Tag", only Prev, Next, Cancel and OK

I have spent hours correcting my tags. I started using the remix field had it all perfect. Then the last build everything disappeared. This happened a couple months ago, then they came out with a new build and it reappeared. So, frustrated I have worked with other tagging software and can't get it fixed. Serious mp3 tagging issues.

Any news regarding to the tagging issue?

do you think we can get this to work for BPM, so the BPM can be written to the tags
instead of having to use the VDJ database manager program

Thanks
Al

if you enable the stuff you quoted the BPM will write to your Tags all on its own just like it is doing for me :-)

I have the sets and gets enabled as above, but the BPM's are not being copied to the tags of the files.

if you read an mp3 in an external tag editor, you see your bpm's that were created in VDJ

This will be fixed on next release.

That's because you have the "setTagsauto" option enabled, therefore this button is not needed to be present on GUI since your changes will be written on the tags anyway.

I don't understand:
You say that external tag reader reads the BPM that was calculated by VirtualDj. Therefore the BPM's are copied from VirtualDj to the tags.

If you want the opposite (VirtualDj copy BPM from the tags to it's database) then this won't happen because the software needs to calculate the BPM based on it's own engine and precision. Otherwise it would through off your mixes and every beat-aware function of the software (like smart loop)

sorry my typo above, let me try again

I have VDJ set as below

GetTagsAuto
SetTagsAuto
GetTitleFromTags
GetCommentsFromTags
GetRatingFromTags

But for mp3's with a blank BPM, I run the BPM scan inside VDJ, now the database has the BPM's, but the BPM's are not updated in the mp3 tags themselves , just the VDJ database. I know this because when I open the mp3's in Tag&rename the BPM is blank.

Thanks
Al

OK I just used the tag editor inside VDJ, to enter a BPM, and it wrote the BPM info to the tag file.
but if I do the scan for BPM it will NOT write the info to the tag file

it would be great to get this working

Thanks
for any help

Is there a date for the next release / update which fixes the tagging issues?
At the moment my workflow is totally gone.
