Topic: The Timecode License is Super Confusing!

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Where on this site does it say that the Pro license includes the timecode license? I looked everywhere, and could not find the info on if the Pro subscription includes timecode . One would assume that if you buy a controller license for $100, that the timecode license would be included. After purchasing the timecode license on top of the controller license, the bill is almost as much as a full Pro Infinity account! Who in their right mind would do this? I keep trying to understand why you guys set it up this way. I love the way users have options to customize the way we buy Virtual DJ, but the timecode license is confusing and seemingly abusive. Anyone else hit this issue? I would have just bought the whole program if I would have known this! Much love!

Why would one assume that to be the case?

Two things...... One - a Plus (controller) license is for home use only. It's not as likely that a home user would want/need timecode. Two - a DJ using a controller has made a choice to control the software that way. Again, it's not likely that a DJ using a controller would also require timecode. It's usually either/or. One or the other.

Since your purchase was recent, you can probably contact support if you want to change your controller license for a pro license.

Two things.....
1. Where on this site does it mention the $149 timecode license? Seriously, I'll paypal someone $20 American if you can provide me with a link that gives warning of this fee. Is there another way I could have found this out besides inside the program? Please! I want to feel stupid here! Show me WHERE it mentions that you need an additional license!!

AND, 2. ...

Look at the comparison chart: http://www.virtualdj.com/products/virtualdj/comparison.html

This is the VDJ language regarding a controller license (mentions that it will be between $49 - $249) "Interface with supported external hardware
(USB/MIDI controllers, timecode vinyls, external mixer, ...)"
Why is timecode vinyl listed if it is not included in the controller license?? When I saw the COMPARISON CHART PROVIDED BY VDJ, I read it as - "hey, you pay for the controller license, and the ability to read timecode is obviously included... " But now I think I get it, what this is actually saying is that Timecode Vinyl is itself a separate controller. But how does that make sense? Its my controller/interface that does the work... the timecode vinyls do nothing by themselves! Thats bull crap you guys! Please tell me, since when has a round piece of plastic been considered a separate, autonomous midi controller?

Look, this is a cool company and they are trying to do something progressive with the many licensing options to choose from. But come on, there seems to be a critical flaw in the logic of how VDJ wants us to pay for the ability to read timecode. Just a little heads up would have been nice. Oh, and btw - I got an offer to go to Infinity for an additional $200 . The thing is, if could have afforded to buy the whole program yesterday I would have! I was about to get the $19 monthly subscription, but saw that the controller price was a one time $100 so I stretched my budget to make it a one time payment . I won't have an additional $200 until after the holidays (times are rough, times are hard, heres a f-ing X-mas card!)... so I guess my $100 controller license will sit in limbo until I earn enough to buy the full Infinity Pro ( I wasn't offered an option for the monthly subscription, which I would be able to squeeze out per month).....

So, please people.... FInd me where it mentions that timecode is considered a separate controller with a separate (more expensive) license, and please explain the comparison chart to me! I'm American and dumb, but I surely prefer VDJ over the Ranes and NIs of the digital jockey world Much love!

You answered your own question. You admitted that you "read it as..."

It doesn't actually say that. It says (as you quoted) "interface with supported external hardware". A controller is hardware. Turntables (for playing timecode) are also hardware.

Every Plus license is for one piece of external hardware. It doesn't include use of other hardware free. If you want to interface more than one thing at a time (so more likely that you're a pro user) then you either buy the Infinity license or subscribe to the monthly rental Pro license.

You can buy a Plus license for every bit of external hardware you have, but it doesn't make economic sense.

But it does not say "external hardware", the word used is "controller". Timecode vinyl is not a controller. Am I wrong to say that the industry standard for "controller" refers to a midi device specifically? Since the turntable cannot 'control' anything without an interface to beam the timecode signal to the program... how is it considered a separate controller? Using the timecode method is predicated on having an interface (and that interface's license).

Is there another example of a "controller" that does not send midi signals? Please advise

I mean, I understand now, but the website's language is very unclear. Please, VDJ, just indicate that timecode is also considered a controller!

Nothing is perfect, so why expect it here? There is nothing, nothing that is written, that everyone understands. Some things take a little thought, or we ask somebody. If it is re-written, someone else will not understand, that's just the way life is. You know what the situation is, so why are we still having this argument? Adion has said, that they may be able to work this out for you, so why not try that out?

The forum is here to help people, all day and all night. If you don't understand something, all you have to do is ask. This software is used all over the world, so there is bound to be some confusion. With all of the languages spoken here, it's impossible to have everyone understand everything. I don't understand everything, but it's not the end of the world, so I come here and ask somebody. One of the first places I look is FAQ, timecode requirements are listed here.
