Anybody know how the Mackie or Alto subs hold up?

I was hired as a Dj at a schoolparty for a couple of years ago, and they got 4 stands with 12" mackies for tops and ONE TA-18 in a large room.
It actually sounded better than I was thinking. Much more deep bass and punch than I was expecting from one TA-18.
If I should buy new cheaper stuff for doing rental or budget I would go for them..
