Topic: Can I hook up a gemini pmx-01 to virtual dj?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hi there, somewhat of a newbie here. I just acquired a Gemini PMX - 01 mixer from a friend who no longer had any use for it. I've been mixing with my laptop on VDJ for a little over a month now, but I was hoping to be able to use my new equipment with it. Here are the specs:

PMX-01
Professional 2 Channel Stereo Mixer

FEATURES:

* 6.5" 2 stereo channel mixer
* 2 convertible phono/line RCA inputs

FACE:

* 2 band rotary EQ control
* Rotary gain channel control
* VU display with bright LED
* Cue section fader allowing cue mix

FRONT:

* Rotary cue volume control
* (1/4" headphone output)

If someone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated!!

If the mixer is ANALOG or not MIDI capable, there is no way you can control VDJ with it (from the looks of the mixer, it's analog).

You can't "control" VDJ with it, because it's not got USB and/or MIDI - but you could "hook it up" to VDJ by buying a suitable external audio interface and plugging the audio outputs from VDJ into the mixer.

If for example you get a MAYA 44 USB, you could configure each deck to have its own audio output and send those to the inputs of the mixer, giving you audio from each VDJ deck on its own fader/channel of the mixer, and allowing you to cue using the mixer.

The ability to do that depends on the version of VDJ you're using.

Hey thanks for the quick responses! I figured that I would need some kind of A/D converter but I was hoping that maybe I wouldn't have to pay an arm and a leg for it. I am really trying to be serious with my DJ-ing but I'm currently a brand spankin new college graduate and am on a bit of tight budget. I figured that once I started to get really good at DJ-ing and producing that I would start to invest in more high-end gear. This piece of equipment just happened to fall into my lap essentially for free so I was hoping that I could get good use out of it.

Right now I'm just running the free VDJ home version so given the circumstances I would imagine that Id need to upgrade to the newest pro version for this to work...

Is the MAYA 44 the cheapest option? Would it be smarter financially to just go out and buy a digital mixer like the Numark Mixtrack Pro 2 or some other kind of "inexpensive" piece of equipment?

My comment was based on what you have right now - VDJ and a mixer.

Of course it's better (and easier) to have a controller of some sort, and some of those have built in mixers.

The Mixtrack Pro 2 though doesn't come with VDJ LE. If you buy something similar which does, then you can get a discount on upgrading to the full Pro version of VDJ - which is then yours for life, whichever controller you may change to in the future.

Examples: Reloop Beatmix, Stanton DJC4, Pioneer DDJ Ergo or WeGo.

The more you pay, the better the product you'll end up with - meaning you won't have to upgrade again for a while, and the more of a discount you'll get on VDJ Pro.

okay, well thanks for the feedback! Definitely gonna have to weigh out my options though
