Topic: Help in connecting 2 midi controllers to virtual dj pro! - Page: 1

This part of topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information

I've been getting into djing by using a stanton djc 4 deck and virtual dj pro. having a lot of fun with it I decided to pick up the novation launchpad today to dip into ableton and to also use as part of my live dj setup with vdj pro. I downloaded the mapper for the launchpad and it works great by itself with vdj. problem is I can only use one or the other as far as controllers and not both. how can I hook up both my stanton and my launchpad to use virtual dj? I looked at my devices connected and the stanton deck comes up as "unspecified" and troubleshooting it can't find anything. not sure if that has anything to do with the two controller issue or not. any help on getting this going is much appreciated!

ive used 3 controllers all at once before, you need to specify the controllers to left/right not deck 1&2 or 3&4. try setting each one to left&right one at a time, see if this works for you.

will try that. how do I assign the each one to left and right? sorry I'm still fairly new at this and when I go to configure I only find sound options etc not anything for assigning the controllers. thank you for your help :)

nevermind I figured out how to set it up left and right but still only one will run at once I'm wondering if this is some setting on my computer I need to adjust rather than in program but I'm not sure. because even if I just plug both my controller and my launchpad in to my computer at the same time only one will respond via lighting up etc. now when I plug the other in it makes the sound that it's been plugged in but no lights or when I touch it nothing happens. any other help is much appreciated!

i plug all of my USB devices in and turn them on first before starting up VDJ, i also notice if i don't have my laptop running off AC power then it doesn't send full power to the USB ports causing them to "reboot" if they've set for a few minutes without action, causing them to disconnect then reconnect. you might also try setting up each device 1 at a time in VDJ. closing and reopening the program each time. then have them both connected, start VDJ, then see if its showing the mapping for them and if you can configure them.

but before we go any further, after just glancing back up at your post, are you trying to run ableton at the same time? if so then ableton is taking one of the controllers probably the launch pad. in this case, you would need to rewire vdj through ableton, use the launch pad with JUST ableton (you can't use 1 controller to control 2 softwares at the same time... not to my knowledge). so you would need to boot ableton with the launch pad connected, then once done, connect your jog controller and then start VDJ. you might want to change your sound card to the computers built in card, or select advance.

then configure the audio out/ins is a different deal and above my pay grade, but you'll need to select vdj as the audio input and your tables as the audio out interface for the built in sound card

Thank you for the help but no I just simply want to use both cotrollers with vdj pro at the same time. that way I can use the launchpad to launch samples and loops and what not while I still use my main deck. when Im not using any program and plug them both in only one will be "usable" and light up and what not while the other makes the sound that it's recognized a USB device is connected but only one will light up. that's why I'm wondering if it's a computer setting rather than vdj since it does that before I even load up a program. once again Thank you for the help! just can't seem to figure the dang thing out.

I'm pretty certain that you can't use a controller (of any sort) with Ableton Live when it's in ReWire slave mode, because control is given to the ReWire master.

Anyway....as the Launchpad OPD mapping was designed for using the Launchpad as a secondary device, I assume it was tested as such - alongside some other controller. I can do a spot of testing here today, as I have the Launchpad and a selection of other controlllers.

I don't have a DJC4 though, so I won't be able to confirm 100%.

yeah, I messed with every setting I could mess with on vdj pro and still can't get both cotrollers connected at the same time. really just don't get it.. will try to upload a quick YouTube vid later to show what is goin on.

Just to confirm - you are using the Launchpad OPD mapping i.e. the one designed to use the Launchpad as a second controller?

yes I downloaded the opd mapper and when the launchpad is the only device connected to vdj it works like it should with the mapper but my stanton won't be responsive. or vice versa when my stanton is plugged in by itself it works great but when they are both plugged in one or the other will be unresponsive, usually the one that is considered the "first" to be plugged in to the USB is whichever one will be responsive.

I have uploaded a short YouTube vid displaying the problem. it's taking forever to process but I'll post a link once it has. in the mean time any extra help is appreciated. this is bugging the crap out of me because it seems like it should be an easy fix.

I tried it in three different USB ports on my computer and started to wonder if the driver or something hasn't installed properly. I am going to try that option and maybe get a cheap USB Hub to hook them both up to and see if that helps make a difference.

OK I've just tried running my Launchpad alongside the Denon HC4500 controller /soundcard 19" unit......

No problems whatsoever. The Denon works & the Launchpad works. Both do what they should.

If I check the mapping tab in config, both the Denon and the Launchpad are listed (+ keyboard & simple MIDI).

What operating system are you using? Is it Vista by any chance? Vista's a bit of a stinker.

Also, do you use a lot of USB peripherals? In other words has the computer had a lot of different USB devices plugged into it since you've had it? Windows can get a bit fussy because the "history" of devices gets overcrowded.

I agree with this, I didn't even think to ask you about your os. If your using windows 7 and depending on your bit version 32/64 make sure you are also installing the 32/64 bit drivers. ive also noticed in the past the system can get confused. you might have to uninstall the drivers for both devices and start over, reboot, plug ONE controller in and set it up, reboot leaving it plugged in and make sure windows detects it fully, unplug/replug while booted. unplug, reboot, and move on to the next controller. also try starting the comp with both devices plugged in

yes i am running vista and it sees its fair share of usb devices, i will try unistalling both drivers etc like suggested.

When you reinstall, stick to one USB port for each device.

If you install the Launchpad using USB port #1 then from that moment on, always plug the Launchpad into that same port.

This'll help prevent the PC getting cluttered with drivers being installed on all the ports because you randomly shoved your kit into a hole!

I'd recommend upgrading to Windows 7 too.

my bad i have 7 idk why i said vista, just woke up lol.. anyways where can i get the stanton driver once uninstalled? couldnt find it online. already re-installed the launchpad and i had to get the driver from the novation website. cant find the stanton once anywhere.

According to the DJC4 manual, the driver is on the supplied CD.

there are two drivers that come with the stanton djc 4, the asio sound driver and the stanton midi driver, the only one on the software cd is the asio driver. i just dont want to uninstall the stanton midi driver if im not certain i can reinstall it..sorry guess im paranoid this thing wasnt cheap haha.
