Topic: When using a timecode vinyl setup, is the pitch range variable or hard-linked to the turntable(s)?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Say I buy a pair of decks with a pitch range of ±12%. Am I still able to adjust the pitch range from VDJ & have the pitch knobs on the decks reflect that setting? Or am I stuck at what the decks are capable of? When mixing with a controller, I change the pitch range on the fly for a couple of mixing tricks I do so if I'm limited by what the turntables can do I think I'm gonna go with an NS7 instead, even though the prospect of adding real vinyl to the mix is enticing.

With timecode, the pitch range is determined by the decks that you are using, so if the only option available is 12%, then you won't be able to adjust more than -/+ 12% on the decks themselves.

However, this should be more than sufficient for most mixing - You should ideally be mixing songs with similar tempo (-/+ 1-2bpm difference) If you need to move to a faster tempo, gradually work your way up to the faster tempo by picking songs that are 1-2bpm faster and then gradually resetting the pitch back to zero after you have mixed in each faster song.

If you purchase a MIDI controller then you can use any pitch range in VirtualDJ (Although depending on the resolution of the pitch slider, you may not be able to make accurate adjustments at extreme ranges such as 50%/100%) The same also applies to most CD players using timecode CD's.

Thanks for the straightforward, if not robotic answer. Like I said, I normally don't go beyond 12-25% but a couple of mixing tricks I invented require a larger range. Looks like the NS7 is going to be in my possession in the near future.
