Apple sealed units are cheaper to manufacture, and their business plan is that once it's had a useful life you'll throw it away and get a newer one rather than go to the bother of upgrading.

Only issue to this is the exorbitant pricing. If they were half the current price it might be feasible but I'm not spending £1500 on a laptop that can't be upgraded . Madness!

I am a HARDCORE PC/Windows user. Always have been, always will be.

But I gave in and bought the 15" Retina MacBook Pro.

It's by far the finest laptop I've ever used. It's thin, elegant, fast, and ... DAT SCREEN .... WOW.

For my home PC, and DJ gigs, I still use Windows machines, mostly because of hard drive space (I have 3 TB in my laptop!), and because the majority of the plugins for VDJ are Windows only.

But for all you Mac haters, next time you walk past an Apple store at the mall, take 5 minutes to go in and touch one of the Retina Macbook Pros. Just touch one, run your finger along the chasse and type a few keystrokes. Scroll the web browser using two fingers on the trackpad. Keep an open mind and evaluate the hardware. There's just an intangible quality to it. Tough to describe until you try it out for yourself.

A wise person once said:

"Quality is not something you can measure, but you know it when it's there".

Macs are quality.

Indeed. I used to have a distaste for Apple products, and I did learn my way around MacOS on a crappy Hackintosh netbook but eventually I needed to get a Mac to do some development in XCode. I ended up liking my MacBook Pro more than I ever expected. It's just a satisfyingly well-made computer that leaves very little to be desired. I figured that, for example, I'd miss having more than two USB ports. As it has turned out, I have had to use a USB hub *once* to make up for that.

They are great machines, and really, they aren't as overpriced as people make them out to be (especially if you buy a base model and upgrade them yourself).

You can buy PCs that are cheap, but as a rule, Apple doesn't make cheap stuff. Their success is derived from their focus -- they don't want to put resources into catering to that market. If you compare best-of-breed PCs offering comparable specifications and quality you aren't usually going to get a significantly better deal.

To those who claim that the retina display is a gimmick - you clearly haven't actually used one. They make everything so easy on the eyes and so clear.

Real DJ's can rock the house with eye-strain and a migraine. High resolution is a gimmick, just like HDTV

Mac haters are funny... I used to be all PC based for my dj rigs. It was the worst thing ever. I since switched to Mac Book Pros and bought the extended warranty. If anything goes wrong in 3 years they cover and fix it. All you have to do is take it in. My pc's would crash and fail all the time. I wasnt using cheap PC's either... I spent 2k plus building some.

I just purchased a 2012 MacBook Pro 15" with Retina display. I manually updated the Hercules RMX2 BLACK theme by DJDAD to be as retina compatible as possible. I basically replaced any graphic images in the theme with text and Unicode symbols which can scale to accommodate retina displays. I had a blast doing the project and I'm really happy with the results. If you're still looking for a retina ready skin for VDJ8 I'd be happy to share. See the pic for a preview of my customized version.

Is virtual DJ 8 retina ready and are there skins available that support the higher resolution? I posted my skin here as I haven't found any retina ready ones available and the OP and other retina users may still be on the hunt.
