Topic: In your opinion which is a better Active Speaker DB Cromo or Mackie Thumps??

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Talking about entry level powered speakers. So in your opinion which do you think is a better speaker. The DB Cromo Series or the Mackie Thumps Series?

The Thumps are utter rubbish IMHO.

Had a few Thumps come into the shop for repair, usually a knackered and expensive DSP board is the culprit. On the other hand, we've sold the Chromo gear, and never had any faults so far...

Never had any problems with my Thumps.
Best speakers ill ever had.

Mackie Thumps sound good but, you wont get a very high volume out of it. They are good for small gigs. They handle 200 watts RMS Total. Its 150 for the LF and 50 for HF. The Spl is 121 db max. The DB's are 126.5 max spl and its 240 watts rms fo LF and 60 watts rms for HF. The Mackie 15 inch vs the DB 12 inch model.

Thank you, someone who actually understands specs. you wouldn't believe how many times I've argued with people who refuse to accept that the Thumps are any less then 400w/800W combined.

But your right they are a speaker system for smaller crowds.

I already have a pair of the TH 15A Thumps and I'm really impressed with them. they are small, light weight and disperse the very well, you can easily forget that these only a 200wrms speaker.
I run a mobile DJ business and these entry level Speakers are perfect for my application. most birthday parties are either in someone back yard or at a small function room of the local pup/club with crowds of more then 100 people most weddings aren't much bigger.
But also i not a fan of the idea of lending a DJ on my payroll a set of DB opera's, JBL's or a HK system and expect him to treat has his own. I would rather sack the DJ and replace a $1000 system then having to folk out 1000's $$$.

My only problem is that i haven't heard the Cromo's. on paper they are a better speaker and i love DB Technologies speakers. but thats not to say they haven't gone to china like Mackie did with the Thumps. And unfortunately the only access i have the Cromo's is through an online store. So i can't go and have a listen my self

so why did you ask? you seem to have your mind made up??

if you ask about speakers the rest of us don't know about how you

operate your business??

look, speakers are a great topic, if you have very specific requirements state that first ........

talking about speaker preferences is fun but wildly subjective .....

talking about specs is interesting and useful , if you wanna do that, at least it's based on some science ,

and you can calculate how much power you need for a space/gig ......

unfortunately we all have budgets so that always limits the possibilities ......

here's a book i have about sound systems

There isn't a big enough difference between the two, their both budget speakers, therefore I'd suggest just going for the cheapest pair.

Sorry mate, didn't mean to mislead you. my mind isn't made up. Like i said i have a pair of the Thumps but I've never seen or heard the Cromo's. So rather then blindly buy a pair of speakers, i was trying to get as much info on them as possible. So i thought 1 good way to get that info would be to ask a world wide audience and get their opinions and/or experience.
If a lot of people gave their opinion and said that 1 set of speakers out matched the other then I've achieved what i set out to do.

Thumps are ok at low volume only. Turn them up higher and they distort. I would pass on them.
