I want to prepare all my formal songs for a wedding in one place so they are easily accessible. In VDJ, which would you use?
A playlist?
or,
A virtual folder?
And... what the heck does it mean that a virtual folder is "un-monitored"?

I think it means it won't show up in a search, and if you delete the source file, it won't be deleted from your playlist or virtual folder, that is just a guess at the meaning, but that is the reality of how they work.
If you use playlists you can save an order, then you can change the sort order with the playlist columns eg key, bpm, name, comment etc... but unfortunately that order can't be restored unless you reload the playlist after changing it, which is a little annoying. In regard to updating the playlists if a song is deleted you can use a plugin for that. the other benifit of playlists is you can use automix if you are playing music over dinner etc... where you don't need to connect with the crowd.
But personally I use both... I use the virtual folders to shortlist tracks for mixes, and the playlist to put them in order and finalise the set but only for recording. for mixing on the fly I use smart filters which can be very powerful if you set them up properly.

One "Con" about virtual folders is you can't organized the songs in the order you may need them, you only have a sort by field which may not work in your favor....
The "Pro" in playlist is you can organize them in the order you need, but You'll have to re-save the list to make it permanent..another "Pro" feature is you can automatically load them to the AutoMix Playlist...The "Con" is you will have to Pre Construct the list, so you wont be doing this at a gig..
If the Virtual folder or A New Type of Virtual folder had the ability to Save in the Order you set your songs..... and send to a deck of your choice, then you could construct a playlist on the fly and use it more easily, so you will be able to do this at a gig....

When I do a wedding (and I do a lot) I put the first dance, father/daughter dance and any other dances in the sample band so it is there and easily accessable.

So you guys are advising that if i want to plan my club sets i should use playlists rather than Virtual Folders?
To be honest, i have ever only used Virtual Folders maybe cos i used Itunes as my back end in the past and so my playlists live there
