Topic: what kind of music to play at a 70's party?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I know this sounds stupid...but...I've nevered did an 70's party before...did everything else but a 70's.....my question is...do i need to read the crowd as normal or do i need to play straight up 70's music? if so...i have an harddrive full of rick james, earth wind n fire, just to name a few...but what 70's songs was jumping back then? I play all urban music at my gigs anyway uno hip hop,r&b al green...but i was just asking!

Check out the 450 Best songs of the 70s page.
The Top 10 is as follows:

    1 ---Superstition - Stevie Wonder
2 ---La grange - ZZ Top
3 ---Roadhouse Blues - The Doors
    4 ---What's Going On? - Marvin Gaye
5 ---Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin
6 ---Get Up - James Brown
    7 ---Superfly - Curtis Mayfield
    8 ---Let's Stay Together - Al Green
9 ---Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
    10 --Imagine - John Lennon

Throw in some disco (Beegees, ABBA) and recognizable classics like the Time Warp (Rocky Horror Picture Show), and the Grease Mega Mix and everybody should have a great time. :)

well sience im from Puerto Rico i have done many 70s partys, what i play is only music from 1970 to 1980 music, from salsa, merengue, disco, funk,Rock, etc. no music that is not from that era. and let me tell you people love it.it brings fond memories from those wonderfull years in music(also it helps to have a mirror ball, bubbles machine, strobe light and fog machine to give that 70s flair). just look for the realease year and hits from those years and belive me you will not play them all in one night. have fun. Viva los 70s

Just like any other night there'll be certain styles that the crowd like best, so you'll have to play a few different types of 70s music and see what goes down well...

I'd make sure I have at least 3 or 4 virtual folders of stuff to choose from:

Background (for the start of the night- a wide range of half decent songs but not the ones that'll get everyone running to the dance floor too soon- this is a good time to see whether it's rock or disco or something else that goes down well. Look to see what gets people's heads nodding, feet tapping, etc.)

Disco - I don't know what it's like in the US, but in the UK, a few disco classics should get people on the floor on a 70s night. These would be my floor fillers...
Bee Gees
Abba
Earth Wind & Fire
Candi Staton
Kool & The Gang
kc & the sunshine band
Donna Summer

Soul/Funk
Stevie Wonder Superstition
Average White Band- Pick up the pieces

Reggae
Bob Marley

Rock - Probably later on the night transfer from disco to rock, whenever the crowd looks like they need a change
Journey (was that 70s?)

Party Classics (Anything cheesy that'd be good for the end of the night with)
Time Warp
Queen - Don't Stop Me Now (not sure if that was a hit in the US or not)
Another ABBA one if it went down well earlier

Obviously these aren't very long lists, but I'm sure you could do a bit of research if you're not sure about more songs for any of the categories.

Hope that helps.

Throw in a little Jefferson Airplane...

White Rabbit comes to mind since this was the hippy generation...

One pill makes you larger...

And one pill makes you small...

And the one's that mother gives you don't do anything at all...

Go ask Alice when shes 10 feet tall...

superaceman's link is very good , i would use that as a starting point

some of those songs (led zep, doors) are from the 60's .......

i would be assuming that they like lotsa 70's (which is very normal) and expect to play 70's and whatever else

they like to dance to......

you should ascertain if it is a themed party , if so then it will be all 70's .......

of course with a premium membership you could easily download any requests that you didn't have ..........

I'd be careful buying off brand compilations. They didn't have CDs in the 70s and sometimes companies don't care so much about quality, they just seem to encode it and sell it. I'd steer more towards the Time/Life collections.

CRash

If you wanna take it somewhere funky try some of these artists, every one knows em, there more fun and authentic than abba and the beegees, who are horrible IMHO.

the meters, parliament funkadellic, Isaac Hayes, james brown, Michael Jackson, Sly & The Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, and rick james bitch!

Oh and you should play "push it to the limit" off scarface... that song cracks me up, and maybe "rush rush" for the coke heads in the room.
