What Antivirus (AV) software you run on your gig machine?
My TrendMicro subscriptions are up for renewal and I am debating on changing to something else. What do you use? I have heard of Microsoft Security Essentials (FREE) being free, AVG, etc but what do YOU use? I'm specifically looking for those who still use Win XP.
Granted, i do have my AV completely disabled when gigging but do have to use the laptop at time for other things (FTP into main desktop to get last minute tracks, etc).

I use AVG on my gig pc.
It is not quite as comprehensive as say Norton but it seems to slow the machine down far less.
I have Norton on my laptop and will use that to scan the drives in my gig pc once a week just to make sure.
Turning off antivirus software is not realy an option if you are a netsearch user. Who knows what you could catch!!!!

I don't have anything. Always have been lucky I guess. The one time I did get something I just downloaded Avast onto a jump drive and ran it in safe mode. Killed the virus and then deleted it.

I'm in IT security as a profession and to be 100% safe keep your gig pc or Mac off off the web as much as possible. Thats not always possible I know so....Always keep any external drives (with music, vids, etc) disconnected as much as possible from the computer that is on the net. Most people make the mistake of not running the THREE commandments of web use - Anti virus, GOOD firewall and a Malware scanner....I run all three on my external drives and all my machines weekly, this it THE BEST way other than staying OFF THE NET... that is the best you can do......Make consistent backups- especially of you music collection, maybe even offline storage if you have the extra $$ in case of fire theft etc.........After trying and trying to hack many of these tools, the ones I use (and they are ALL FREE) are Avast Anti Virus, Comodo Firewall and Malware Bytes..........FYI dont think installing multiple firewalls or AV products works - because they just conflict with each other.....U can run multiple Malware scanners, just one at a time, NOT IN REAL TIME SCAN MODE, only one!.........If you want to be 100% safe, NEVER file share with TORRENTS or anything else P2P......Scan all dwnloads with the AV of your choice ALWAYS before opening.......
If You need any further help, message me....I'm a total newbie DJ or wanabe DJ lololol, but computer security I know =D
FYI..I know slowing down the machine is a CHIEF CONCERN....none of the products I use (and mentioned above) affect my DJ laptop at all negatively, be aware many of the Suites will...Norton, McAfee, etc
Acer, dual core 4 G RAM, 2 G processor, Win 7 Home Premium, Toshiba 1 G ext. HDs

+1 everything he said is true. im also a pc tech & pro DJ Nice Post. i use the same avast/malwarebytes my laptop (gig machine) stays off the internet i do everything on my home pc & transfer it to my laptop. the only tyme i connect my laptop to the net is to do the windows update thang thats it
Posted Tue 26 Jul 11 @ 12:37 am
a word of caution on the above post ^^....... transferring ANYTHING from a web connected PC or MAC to another PC/Mac/HD can easily just TRANSFER the Malware/ Infection to that machine/HD....scan EVERYTHING and RESCAN WKLY....remember ANYTHING that EVER connects to the internet CAN BE INFECTED........not to scare you, just be careful and NEVER lapse in your security routine........FYI...I know that you MAC users THINK that you are safe, it is only because not as many viruses are written for your machines...there are simply too few MACs in the world (hard to believe I know) for the hackers to get off on F' ing up your machines....But there ARE JUST AS MANY people that like to attack MACs out there as PC hackers...be careful!!!!.......

i use Avira Antivirus and Malwarebytes, ive never had aany problems while running these on any of my systems, the min reason i use avira s it seeks out rootkits and has built in rootkit removal, often antiviruses dont tend to have rootkit removal.
one thing i can say with 100% confidence is, never ever use norton, mcafee or kaspersky. i once a couple of years ago got a virus that spread across my entire home network, it disabled all antivirus programs i installed to kill it. the only one it never disabled was avira.
ive never looked back since.

+1 as I am a Tech guy as well and agree. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY above all else USE Common Sense!!! Do not do Torrents, do not click on things you are not 100% positive of, Do not open emails that you do not know from who or strange subjects. You can have awesome Virus and Malware protection and do stupid stuff and get virus/malware infected.
I have none, using MAC but like I said use common sense

Apple Admits Macs Aren't Impenetrable After All = The Internet was ablaze with Apple talk yesterday. Several news sources picked up on ZDNet's news that Apple was telling its support techs to avoid helping helpless Mac users plagued by the Mac Defender malware. Apparently, the topic struck a sore spot – our blurb on the issue drew almost 60 comments. Awash in a flood of bad publicity, last night Apple officially published a support page on its Web site to help Mac Defender victims take back control of their computer.
Apple's reluctant response seems pretty well thought out, actually. On the support page, the company pledges to release an update designed to hunt down and take out Mac Defender within a few days. In the meantime, the page does a decent job at describing the malware's characteristics, then goes on to provide worried Mac users with specific instructions not only on how to remove the program, but also how to avoid becoming infected in the first place.
While some of the suggestions might seem straightforward (Don't enter your admin password when a surprise program installs, duh), it's nice to see Apple doing the right thing and (finally) helping out their customers.

The Game is Afoot: "Mac Defender" Malware Already Evolving = Not a day after Apple finally acknowledged the Mac Defender trojan, the original malware author has changed up the attack, making it even harder to prevent infection. The main impediment before was that users had to enter their administrator password, but the new variant no longer requires that. It's a brave new world for Mac users, folks.
Since most Macs are run under a single user account, most instances of the operating system are running as administrator. That means this new version of the malware, called MacGuard, will simply pop up a dialog box. The user does not have to enter their password. Instead they only have to click Continue. Once installation is complete, the installer removes itself from the machine's Application folder, leaving no trace.
This installed application then reaches out and installs the main malware app that is similar to the original Mac Defender. There is no prompt to the user when this happens. The new malware app is a clear response to Apple's instructions in the support document. Users that thought they could avoid infection just by keeping their password to themselves are apparently in for a rude awakening. That other OS maker can tell you one thing, the malware arms race won't just stop.

AVG for windows FREE, ftw. I've been using it since about 2000, never had a problem. Before that I had Norton and it was up-to-date and still got some stupid virus.
The Mac virus thing.... They keep telling us Mac users that just keep the machine up to date and it's impossible to get a virus.
The one thing I like about apple is that when I go to the store, they always make me happy.
For instance, I had purchased the nike shoe thing that tracks your steps (for my wife), turns out that since she has an iphone 4 that thing is completely useless.
So I went to ask why did they sell me something that's useless, they said "oops" and gave my money back. Out of it's box, no receipt and it was worn off a bit. So I could have found it on the street and just taken it there and gotten money for it.
Took an iPhone there, and since it had been less than 1 year, they gave me another one. Just like that.

is there a link to that you speak of? I can't find it anywhere.
Nevermind, I just found it. I know what that is, hahahahah i've been seeing it in lots of pages that I visit, it says is an anti virus tool for the MAC.
You have to download it and install it. If you're that inexperienced as to just install anything you find on the web on your computer, then perhaps the user is the tool.
