Topic: FM Static Noise when I record a Mix (VMS4 controller)

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Okay guys, I am having a blast with virtual dj, ran a demo for a week or so, and everything was great except, that I used to DJ with a traditional rig (i.e. turntables, cd decks, and a mixer), and found the virtual knobs to just not be sufficient for what I wanted to do, so i looked around for another week or so and finally decided that I wanted a Denon MC6000, but budget wouldn\\\'t allow it, so I settled on a VMS4, which for most purposes seems to be almost identical, just from a slightly less reputable company (audio quality wise anyway, their lighting equipment is hard to beat)...anyway I got my new toy and everything is going smooth, and I am having a blast with my new toys, a week or so after using the le version that came with the vms4, I decided to upgrade to the full version, and life got even better...

Here my issue though, when I am recording a mix (both using audacity and the recorder in VDJ), I get this FM static noise, that wasn\\\'t present when I was using the demo, so I decided maybe it was using my 1/8\\\" line in on a soundblaster soundcard (great for games, not so much for audio apps), so I ordered up an M Audio audiophile 24/96 from ebay, figuring that would fix the problem, and it might have helped, but not much if it did, so I thought maybe it is my usb cable running from the vsm4 to the computer, so I got a nicer shielded one, which actually seemed to make the problem worse, so I switched back, then I switched the rca\\\'s I was using to a nicer rocksford/fosgate one I had, and still little to no improvement, well after all of that I had kinda exhausted all my options, (I do have an even nicer moster cable rca on it\\\'s way to my house, but I really don\\\'t think that is going to fix much either, truth be told) but like I said I am feeling exhausted with the issue, and have finally came to the idea that maybe I have some settings wrong internally in computer, and I was hoping that maybe someone else might have encountered this issue before and could help, here is some screen shots from my machine to help...

and now all of the sudden I am getting the error in video card message, so i'll need to restart my computer to get a screen shot of those settings, but they are pretty basic, I got them from the post DJDad made about setting up a VMS4...audacity settings are pretty basic as well, nothing fancy, just the standard basic out of the box settings with input coming from my line in on my m-audio card...

as far as hearing what I am mixing, I used a basic radio shack 1/8" to rca y cable and ran from the m-audio rca outs to my soundblaster 1/8" line in...let me restart my machine I'll post my virtual dj settings...

truth be told I have read some stuff about latency and honestly I don't really know what that is, but I am wondering if that might be my issue...

thanks in advance...

oh and everything is as update as can be, drivers, windows, vdj, etc., i am pretty diligent about that stuff for whatever reason...

Here are the other screenshots:

I did just get the idea to try a different usb port, but I have pretty good feeling that isn't going to matter much, I also turned off safe mode, as you can see in the screenshot, but prior to right now, it has been on...

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated...

thanks,

yes, the changes I made did not help, if anything they seem worse now...

got it...i mistakenly believed that usb ports that were part of my motherboard would be a better usb connection, i switched the usb from the vms4 to one of the usb ports on my firewire card, and wahlah no more static...both sets are 2.0 usb, so I dunno...but it's working now...

Do you plug your VMS4 to AC ? or is it powered by USB ?

I plug in the AC adapter as well, but it will run on the usb, but I do you use the ac adapter, I've tried both ways tho, and it didn't really seem to make much difference, thanks for checking in though, I really appreciate it. I think the problem was the usb ports on my motherboard, because after plugging the usb (from the vms4) into one of the usb ports on my firewire card, it seems to have gone away, at least 99% of it, it still pops and clicks every so often, but I think that is more of a latency issue...sound quality (outside of the static noise disappearing even) has improved greatly as well...

I am not sure if there is an issue with usb ports on the motherboard (I know there is one usb, that is messed up, the hard plastic piece inside is missing, and the prongs are bent inside of it, kinda thinking it is probably this, but I am not computer literate enough to know for sure), or if the usbs on my motherboard are underpowered, or overdrawn, or something else completely either, but like I said the issue seems to be at least mostly resolved...

thanks again for checking in, I really appreciate you taking the time...

thanks,
