Topic: Question about Denon DN-S5000 and DN-S3500 Record timecodes as MP3 or reg audio CD?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hey all,

I have one of each machine, both a DN-S5000 and a DN-S3500, and I was wondering if there was any in the functionality or quality of the control if I record the timecodes on a disc as an MP3 or just burn them as a regular audio CD? I have them burned right now as a regular audio CD, but I was thinking, instead burning the timecodes as an mp3 disc instead. Would the control or latency suffer or anything?

The reason I am asking, is that I have the timecodes burnt as track 1 on a regular audio CD, with other songs as a backup on the disc in case my computer freezes, or some other catastrophe happens and I have to play from the CD's instead. I also have my iPhone loaded with music and ready to plug in just in case also. BUT I was thinking that I might burn an MP3 disc with many more songs to choose from as backup on the discs just in case too. Is there any drawbacks or advantages to the functionality by using the timecodes as an MP3 with VDJ vs. using them recorded as an audio CD instead? Any control / scratching / etc... issues by doing so?

I don't really use any of the effects or looping functions or anything like that on the Denon's as I use VDJ for all of that.

So far I am not having any major issues with VDJ so far as I can tell with this set-up. I used to have to reset my audio properties once in a while due to issues with the timecodes lagging heavily and losing responsiveness in my set-up when VDJ was used for a couple of hours at a time, but I haven't had that problem in a while. I will know this weekend if any of those problems persist. That is a whole other issue though.

Thanks

I know this is late in coming, but as far as I know (I used to be an official Denon DJ, and used the 5000's for years) the way you are doing it now it the correct way. You have to burn it as an audio CD with Track 1 as the timecode. Like you did, you can add as many tracks as the CD will hold after that. Mine was usually about 15-18 more tracks, but that is because I cut the timecode down to 6:30. If a song lasts longer than six minutes, I had no business playing it.
Also, I don't know if you do this.... but this method allows you to use the Alpha Track feature of the DN-S5000. I would load a bunch of acapellas after the timecode, and then play instrumentals on VDJ or Serato and switch to the alpha track to load the acapella and play it over the instrumental. You can then switch to the other deck and load another instrumental or song or whatever and mix it in. Boom, live mash-up. The CD method like that allows you to used all 4 decks (if you have two 5k's).

Hope this isn't too late, and I hope it helped!
