Topic: What camera for live video?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hello all.

Hope I'm not asking an old question but I searched and couldnt find the info I'm after. I want to do a live feed and know of the live camera effect and firetxt. I tried it with a cheap webcam whilst playing in low light and it worked but the picture was very blurred and judderry (low frame rate?). Was thinking of getting a better webcam (Logitech C510 as read in another post) but thought I'd ask.

What cameras do you guys use? I am now thinking maybe a camcoder would be better than a webcam especially for the zoom and probable better low light ability. Also it can pan on a tripod or be handheld.

Those who use live video please list your cameras and how you are connected to virtual dj for live video. Also please let me know of the smoothness of video, ease of setup and lowlight performance. Give a mark out of 10 or something. This applies even if you use a webcam. Am trying to work out what is best to buy and hopefully this will be informative for everyone.

Many thanks.

I use this with this. I give it a 9 out of 10, when working with the camera plugin.

AhhMAN.... It's the second (This) that gives most heart failure.... :^)

Hey Renee, long time. Don't sweat it, I got mine for $600.00 on ebay. I had one of these first. It was OK. Oh, do you still have that....you know.....um.......wait it's coming to me.....oh, Husband hanging around? If you stop feeding him those sandwiches, he'll go away.

Is that the dazzle you use? What camera do you use with it?

Wow. I must be charging too low coz that sony is waaaay out of my price league. Nice camera though!

I use the Microsoft HD Cinema:

http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/digitalcommunication/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=008

From the reviews it is one of the better low light cameras. I had a few $20 camaras, the video was really poor in low light.

This camera with ustream running is very processor intensive. I recommend at least a 2.0ghz duo core. 2.4 would be better. I would not run this on the same computer with vdj unless I had an i7 processor- maybe. To get 24fps in the dark at 640x480(using ustream non-hd) you need to turn off all the automatic junk.

Turn off clearframe, turn off auto focus, auto exposure and turn up the brightness a little bit. From what I hear its the best to do that with any camera.

You can see the recorded stream here: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/dj-kavika

The choppiness is not the camera; I was using web browser/flash encoder. The choppiness only happens during recording. It looks fine live. If you use ustream also use the producer program. It encodes it better than the web browser/flash encoder. If you see a video clip that is smooth that is the program I used.

thanks,

Shop around for a better price. It will pay for itself in no time. MP3Rick turned me on to this capture device and camera. To me, pan, tilt, and zoom is the only way to go. There is nothing like zooming in on the birthday girl, or bride and groom, putting them on the big screen, and scrolling text. In the clubs, I zoom in on the girl with the big breast, and scroll, "What....I am looking you in the eye."

Thanks for that. On the webcams I was considering the Logitech C510 webcam but will also consider you microsoft lifecam cinema webcam as well. The Lifecam is currently £32.99 and the C510 IS £29.99 ON Amazon so the prices aint bad.

Anyone know which one is better?

i got it for £25 in the sales. its actually really good and the motion tracking speed is awesome. theres almost zero delay. the delay that it does have is so tiny its hard to catch unless youre really looking for it.

Thanks for that. If your Logitech C310 works fine then the other models should be ok. Am considering Logitech and with the C510 costing £29 on amazon, I might look into it.

In the Uk zooming in on birthday girl's chest could land you in trouble and have you signing a certain register. Too much PC Brigade here! Your cam is real nice though.

Incidently, the zoom and pan stuff is what I would really like. Camcoders might be cheaper and produce an even better image.

Anyone manage to use a normal camcoder live with vdj?

I love my sony D70! It only gets a hand full of uses per year...during prom season...but it's a great camera for what we do. I'm glad this post came up, as I need a new capture device with windows 7. I have been using my sony hc96 camera as a pass thru, but usb stream will not work with windows 7.

Please read my post again. This is what I said, "In the clubs, I zoom in on the girl with the big breast, and scroll, "What....I am looking you in the eye." There are no 16 year old girls "In the clubs", that I work in.

Relax man...and his music. I was just joking! Think I missed the mark....!

Anyway. Have ordered the Logitech C510 webcam and will try it out and let you all know how good or bad it is. Im doing this mainly because of price and time as I need it for this Saturday. Many thanks to everyone for your contributions. Of course the thread is still open feel free to add any other cameras to the discussion as it might help someone.

Back soon...

huh been away awhile ....yes its a Dazzle but I've not used it since i got a flip ultra hd cam only to find out it doesnt stream live via its Hdmi.
usually add its video on top of the output video or a screen grab via a video editor as an insert....

Lost me completely there. Can you break it down for thick lil me? Would like to use a proper camera if possible.

In the meantime I have received and used the Logitech C510 and I glad to report that it is quite good. The swivel feature is especially useful as you can effectively manually pan the webcam if its clipped to your laptop. Or you can turn it to face you if you have an urge to.

Lowlight function is quite good and It managed to still display a picture in very low light - lower than most people will be working at. Not an amazing picture but useable.

For how much it costs, it is very good. Im quite impressed. Now am thinking of getting a usb extention lead so I can mount it on my gantry. Comes in a lil pouch and folds down for storage.

Hope that helps someone!
