I am posting here merely for the information of anyone looking for this info later, as I have been troubleshooting for the last 2 hours and this just solved my problem.
If someone here uses VDJ with an external mixer and 4.1 card, the rear output will NOT work with microsoft's default driver. You need to download the Realtek HD audio driver R2.53
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsview.aspx?langid=1&pnid=24&pfid=24&level=4&conn=3&downtypeid=3&getdown=false
And then go in the realtek aduio manager and select "Quadriphonic" speaker configuration.
Voila, problem solved. Looks like microsofts driver just outputs the rear output to the front output and fudges everything up.
I know this is probably known to everyone here, but it wasn't adressed anywhere in my (long) searches. So here it is for a future beginner like me!
