Topic: How do I change buffer size on a Macbook?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hi....

I am using the VDJ program with an Xponent. After a couple nights of trying to get rid of the occasional, crackly, or, "flamming" sounds that almost sound like timestretching issues, I can't seem to find where I increase my buffer size in any configuration windows. is the only way to do this in VDJ is in the, "Performances" pane where I can adjust between, "Faster" or, "better performance?" I have that setting on what would be the 25% mark. There is still the sounds that need to be fixed by a bigger buffer size and i can't seem to figure out where this is..

Intel Macbook
2.16ghz
Snow Leopard 10.6.3

Doesn't the Xponent have any sort of Contorl panel where the buffer size could potentially be changed ?

I'm guessing you have the latest drivers for it ?

Remember that when changing the setting in the Performance tab, you are affecting the the software behavior, not directly the soundcard.

Thank you :)

I didnt have the latest driver. It seemed to knock out about 85% of the audio problems. Its still not totally fixed and I couldn't find any control panel that would control the buffer size on the Xponent...There's gotta be one somewhere.....I'm still looking.

Thanks again

I don't think you can change the device latency on the mac side, my HC-4500 has a control panel for Windows but Mac does not, I guess the latency is controlled by the Mac core audio.

Hello kradcliffe,

You can change the audio latency on Mac OS with VirtualDJ 6 Pro.
Go to VirtualDJ > Config > Performances table, and in the Sound Card latency setting, instead of Auto, you can set another latency (on my MacBook, the latency choices are 1ms, 2ms, 5ms, 11ms, 23ms and 46ms).

Yes, you can change latency in the VDJ software, but I don't think you can change it on the device itself like you can in Windows with a control panel plugin.

Thanks guys.....

This is pretty much where I started. I saw the latency setting in the, "performances" pane but thought that only dealt with the response of the midi buttons I would hit on the Xponent. I had no idea it was related to the sound performance...Should I be increasing or decreasing that ms number?

I just came from using Torq software and in that, you can adjust the buffer size even though I am on a mac...I don't think I can go into Torq and adjust the buffer size and expect it to work when I open up VDJ....Can I?

Increase the number to avoid glitches, but the larger number makes the keys less responsive.

Remember to restart VDJ after changing settings on that page for them to take effect properly.

11ms generally works but 23ms should be fine and responsive enough. Just play about to see what suits you best and what your system can handle.

The Torq settings will have no effect on VDJ at all.

Hope you get it sorted :)

Thanks....

I tried to change my setting to 11ms, but the program just froze up. I changed it back to 5ms and its working again......I guess my computer won't allow me to increase that number. Too bad. I'm on a Intel Macbook at 2.16GHZ. I thought this would be fast enough for latency settings.

That's strange as it's a lower number that puts more strain on your system ???

I know....It works with 5ms and lower....(Still a few glitches) but not with 11ms and up...Strange.

I have 3 gigs in Vegas starting tomorrow nite and although this isn't a major issue, Its still not ideal. I hope I can find a way to increase that number sometime today.

Thanks for your help
