Topic: iMac 24 Mounting for DJ Use

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I just picked up a new 24" iMac on closeout at the Guitar Center. This thing is absolutely beautiful! I also ponied up and got two QSC HPR 181i 18" subs and two HPR 153i three way tops.

My questions is regarding my iMac, has any one used one for DJing and how do you have it mounted?

Any opinions on this thing and why it is better than my super high-end PC?

Thanks...

Really!? No one here uses an iMac to DJ with? Wow...

So far it's freaking awesome...

Can you use the video out under windows on your imac? I use a macbook and run vista via bootcamp, the video output doesnt work under bootcamp on my macbook. I would pick up an imac if the I knew the video output worked under bootcamp on an imac.

I'm new to using a Mac for music, why can't you just use the mini-display port to DVI adapter to connect to an LCD or projector and run VDJ in Snow Leopard. Why do I hear a lot of DJs talk about Bootcamp and running Windows on a Mac?

I ran VDJ on my iMac last night without any trouble... Educate me please!

I use a 24 inch iMac as well, but I'm still new to this. It's connected to a Hercules RMX, which goes great with it aesthetically. Right now, I'm just practicing. The screen size is great to work with and everything is all in one, but don't you find it a bit cumbersome to move around? Also, are you using a wireless keyboard?

The only reason using VDJ under Bootcamp (I think) is that you have all the effects available. If you don't need effects written for the Windows-version, I would hang on to the Mac-version.
(BTW: got it now running on a G5: flawless....!)

I have an older IMAC and use it for DJ'n. (Audio Only) Use a HC4500 with Denon 500 mixer.

I currently don't have it mounted and prop it to the right of my DJ case. I use an ILugger to transport from Gig to Gig.

I rarely use the effects on VDJ anyway since I have a pro DJ mixer (DJM-800). I was curious as to why some dual boot their Macs so that explains it, I have no need to do this then, kool!

Yes it is a bit cumbersome, I haven't done a gig yet with it so we'll see when the time comes how it will be. If you know me you know that nothing I own is easy to lug around to begin with so this will not prove to be any different for me, lol. I am one of the least mobile, mobile DJs you will ever meet. My speaker system alone weighs over a half ton!

Yeah, I kind of figured you have other item to carry around after I posted. I was trying to attach a photo of mine, but am not sure how to go about doing it.

if you put the link to the image in your post i'm sure one of the guys will display it for you. you need to be a pro user to do that.

plus, you really don't need to duplicate the post above you.

Thanks.

I was just quoting him. No harm intended.

UPDATE: As I posted in the Mac forum last night, the 24" iMac went back to the Guitar Center. I decided it was too much screen for me so I ponied up an extra "G" and picked up a spankin' new MacBook Pro! I really love it! I also bought the Mini-Display Port to DVI cable and then attached the DVI to HDMI adapter so I can use my screens just like on my Toshiba Qosmio PC laptop. Works beautifully!

Now I just need to dial in the soundcard configs...

I'll post pix soon

Macbook pros are good. I have one and it rocks for DJ use. I boot camped mine running windows XP pro.

From one MacBook Pro owner to another - one of the best investments you'll ever going to make :)

I agree! Mine's about 4 years old now and after a few mods ( 320gb hard drive more and faster ram) it's still going strong. Works almost flawless with VDJ 6.0.7 for audio and video mixing.

Years ago I bought and used a 17inch iMac G5 for Video mixing and built it into a custom road case - it was awesome but way too heavy and bulky for most audio gigs. Either a Macbook Pro or a custom rack computer would be the way to go.
