so are you a full time club dj?

Me neither. With my day time job (and age) I couldn't cope with regular 2am/3am finishes. That's when it bcomes full time as you need the rest during the day before the next session!!!!

I currently do one night a week - a commercial house, dance & R&B night the club calls it "The Weekend Warmup".

However I do make exceptions occasionally ;-) I'll find out for sure later, but the plan for December is for me to do an 80's/90's night on a Wednesday, my regular Thursday night re-badged "Office Party Night" with the usually cheese and Christmas songs thrown in between the commercial stuff and then for me to open on Fridays & Saturdays before the harder house DJ's take over.

So that will be 4 nights a week but early finishes on Fri/Sat. They also know the harder house DJ's only bring in a select crowd, hence the reason for me starting the evening off with a more commercual feel. So they must like what I do.

The place has only been open since August so we're still trying to build a regular clientele. Place has been re-furbished well though. I'll try and take some photo's and post them here.

Wages aren't brilliant, but once the place gets established I'll be looking to link my pay with the increased popularity.

Cheers,

Roy

For anybody who makes personal mixes (youtube, mixtapes) or even the vdj radio dj's, how do you pick you song selections for your mixes. i mean whats your process do you hear songs in your head and feel the motion to add it to a mix.. the reason im asking is i keep tryin to make mixes and pick songs but my success of this is not good so far and thus preventing me from making a good list to practice and eventually distribute or even think about distrubitn.

my process i find some songs that i like, get them set up via bpm and go at it but it seems to never "work out" in a smooth flow..help me out .

Practice. practice. practice..

its like putting together a puzzle..
you start with one song you REALLY REALLY like, and then take another song thats close to the same BPM and style, and then try and fit them together.. either is fits or it doesnt.. if it doesnt you try another, and then another until you have a two song mix..

then you start all over again and try and fit a third song in..

You do this enough times, and pretty soon songs start 'snapping' together with very little forethought..

i like that....in my mind i been trying to get it all set up and then mix ...but i like that idea take one at a time...until i can do it without thinking....SMART...

The best way to select music is to feel it.

I have been dj'ing for 21+ years. (Damn I been at this a long time). There are several ways to guide yourself through your selection.

1. BPM...I usually start with slower BPM's and work my way up. While mixing, it always sounds better to play a track faster rather than slower so if you have a track thats like 80 BPM's and your nekt track has a BPM of 85, Slowly speed the slower track up so the new track will come in at the correct BPM. Remember that faster is always better than slower.

2. Topic...If your playing a song about money, follow up with a song about...Money. You want to keep a theme if you can.

3. Location...You can do a West Coast Set...Dirty South Set...Reggae Set...Radio Hip Hop Set...The list goes on and on.

As you practice and get more familiar with the music it will all fall into place for you. You will find yourself doing things that just work.

I myself never go out with a playlist and I never know what i'll play. It all depends on the crowd. Many on the forums will disagree with me on this point but I rarely take requests. When I do cabarets, I say what my rules are. "I got some rules in my parties. Rule #1. I do not take requests. 98% of what you might ask me to play, I'm already gonna play. The other 2% I wasn't gonna play anyway so asking me won't help. Rule #2 is PARTY PARTY!!!).

I still get requests and I still play them but I find that most requests, 98% of them are songs that I planned to play anyway and those weird, off, kinda out there requests i'm just not playing no matter what.

Some have said i'm a MEAN dj. I don't have a lot of conversation. No is No. Not i'll try to get to it or I'll play it later. If I'm not gonna play it...The answer is NO.

Sorry, I went off topic.

Just listen to the music and you'll hear what mixes and what wont. Listen to the radio mix shows and listen to VDJ Radio.

Above all else...PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally let VDJ help you. There should a filter called "Compatible Songs" with the filter "bpmdiff<=4 and keydiff=0". Click on this when you are playing a tune and it will return other tunes from your library which should mix well. You can then create new filters and narrow the results you get back, like including the genre.

based off this filter does anybody know how to make it genre specific...ive tried several ways to get just that genre of music to filter and i cant...or is there another filter that will do such by ex:

compitble songs within a 2 or 3 bpm range in the same genre,,,\

reason i ask is i do christian gospel mixes mainly but i have rnb rap mainstream also and i want to filter specifically for such

Just at the following to the filter

and genre="<genre here>"

Cheers,

Roy

@ roy,

yu are the man...it works now im on my way to practice practice practice...

side note" i was using (and) instead of (or) to add multi genre,, but im catching on to the filter system ....
