Topic: Smart Ripper and .vob files

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

For those of you that use Smart Ripper or .vob files. I just recently started using these .vob files. While VDJ does run the .vob with no problems, what are all these other files for, that are created in the process? It seems that only the one .vob is needed by VDJ. Are all these others files needed for anything? I was guessing that they may be need for some type of conversion process, but not sure.

I rip all my DVD's to .vob but I don't use smart-ripper I use Sony Vegas. (Yes you only need one video file)
What "other files" are you talking about?
What are the file names?

Whaaaa??? Sony Vegas will rip DVDs ??? Gotta look closer at my stuff !

I have Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9. It is way improved over Movie Maker 2. No crash last project ... halilullah.

Thanks Renee I check it out. Does it keep the intro chapter and main video chapter as one contigeous file? I use TMPGEnc Xpress which does.

Wow I'm ripping one down. Looks like the chapters are correct for having the intros+main as one file. Only thing is the Vegas seems to hog down my PC. CPU is up. I'm getting some delay as I type this. TMP seems to run more efficiently.

Gracias,

Jim

I have used both smartripper and magic dvd ripper. Smartripper is free but gotta say that magic dvd ripper makes the ripping a lot better. While smartripper hangs/shuts down on some dvds, magic ripper always does its job. Also you can rip multiple dvds in a batch etc, no errors ever. Worth of every penny.

Vegas is a CPU hog but It's what I'm most familiar with especially when I need to edit a video which happens a LOT. The vast majority of my DVD's are Promoonly and in those cases I don't use Vegas OR any of the generic ripper programs. This program http://lmoffice.com/DJExtractor/ will rip P.O. videos and will also name the files automatically which is a big time saver.

(Note: This program only works with Promoonly or Screenplay videos.)

Thanks Renee for the link. I'll try it out in the next few days. So what Promo Only series do you get? I subscribe to both Hot Video and Club Video, but I'm getting a bit annoyed at the duplication of videos between the two.

I'll be hitting the Promo Only table at Atlantic City next month to renew my subscriptions, and give them an earfull. I'm considering keeping the Hot Video and moving to another vendor for my Club series. I'll be shopping.

JimL

Currently I subscribe to Hot Video, Country Video, Express Video, Mainstream Radio, and Country Radio. I spend enough money with Promoonly they probably regard me as their "Sugar Mama".... LMAO

The program above is very good, you can rip the whole file OR split the intros from the main video which I prefer. The program is free or you can make a donation to Louis the developer if you wish.

Wow... Renee thanks for the program tip. The Promo Only tech support wouldn't recommend anything. This program is working nicely right now.

I can't wait to try it on last month's Club Video with that huge PowerSet track ... and see if this program can figure things out better than XPress did.

It's cool that you invest well in your tools. I would think Florida gigs pay pretty well. Once I get up to "Video Assassin" level I'll be coming down to find a good gig for this great DJ ... hehehehehehe

I'm comparing the Hot Video August DVD ripped with XPress to DVD Decrypter's output. So far Xpress ripped Britney Spears - Radar @ 79,141 KB and DVD Decrypter is 181,836 KB. This Friday I'll play them side by side to determine if size matters.

The DVD Decrypter utility to autoname the tracks is fantastic. I've been copy/pasting from Promo Only's web database for a couple of years now. What the heck will I do with all this extra time ???

Renee if you cut off the intros, doesn't the main track get a weird beginning? Like truncated audio? I like intro+main format and set a cue mark where I want to start the mix. I guess removing the intro will indeed save some space if you don't keep 'em.

I thank thee Queen Suger-Momma of PO :)

P.S. Hmmmm... DVD Decrypter just crashed at at the end of the process, but looks like it ripped everything ok. I got the last 3 Ambients ripped successfully. Huhhhh... we'll see what happens with another session.

I rip all my Dvds with the DVD Decrypter.. Easy to use... & 100% effective.

Oops...typo

Not DVD Decrypter I meant DJExtractor .... sorry

Hey Renee,
Thanks for the response. When using smartripper it creates 7 files. 2 vob files, one of them contains nothing that says o kb the main vob says 20,430 kb. There is a text document that gives the whole files specs. An ifo, lst, idx and d2v file. A whole lotta crap apparently. Maybe there is a way to configure smartripper to just create the vob, I dont know. I have not spent enough time on it to know. I was just trying to find something to rip the ambient videos of my PO's and this seems to do the job. I can just eliminate the other files to clean things up a bit. I probably will check out some of the software mentioned here later. When ripping my videos I have no use for intros and stuff like that. So I have been pretty happy with #1 DVD Ripper as far as that goes. I suppose you could really notice the difference in the videos that are ripped by different programs side by side. I remember back when mp3's ripped at 128kbs were supposed to be cd quality and then I started playing them all through a Mackie system and decided to start ripping them at a better quality. I noticed the audio was not that great in some of my earlier rips of videos. Im sure the picture quality comes into play too. Especially once thrown up on the projector. I really have only got a chance to use my videos on a few occasions. Dont seem to be having any problems with the audio and video being out of synch though, like I have read about here and there. Anyways. thanks again.
