I've used a firewire drive from day one, and it's been very reliable - never a problem ;)

Firewire, eSata or USB wasn't problem with my Seagate, it's the whole damned hard drive period!

If your computer/laptop has a firewire port I also recommend getting a firewire hard drive. Its fast, reliable and also gives you that extra USB port for another device you might need.

+1, great advice...

Exactly why I bought the Seagate, because it was eSata and it wouldn't take up one of my USB ports. The Seagate drive is a Ménage à Trois device (OK, you can remove your dirty thoughts now), USB, eSata and Firewire. I switched up through all three and it didn't change the issues it was having.

I've had a variety of external drives and just bought a new one yesterday.

My first external was a self assembled 3 1/2 mains powered drive. Can't remember whats in it, but, I bought the box and installed a 160gb desktop drive. Any 3 1/2 desktop drive can be installed. It's still holds a backup of lots of my programs and still works fine. It has never left the house to work at gigs though.

My first external to be used at gigs was a USB powered 2 1/2" 80gbs FireLite Smartdisk, still works great and use it at home for some backups. Never ever had any issues with it, just outgrew it.

My second external was also USB powered 2 1/2" 160gbs, a Freecom Toughdrive. I started with video about 20 months ago with this drive. What was surprising was that I used to store my early videos on this drive and it was connected thru my cooling plate which had extra USB ports, but, they were only USB 1.1!!! I didn't know that at the time, had no problem with loading videos. I did have problems a couple of times where the drive lost connection with Windows XP, probably an insufficient power issue, thats when I relegated this drive to home backups too (used on my previous Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop). I've since been using a USB 2.0 powered hub (7 port).

I then bought a mains powered Maxtor external 3 1/2" 500gb. I mainly chose that model because of the 5 year warranty. I have been using that drive for about a year now. Because of its 7200rpm speed it does get very hot by the end of my gigs. I have been using my videos from my internal drive and the occassional mp3 from the external. I do have the videos backed up on this external as well.

Yesterday I bought one of the new breed of 2 1/2" 500gb USB powered Seagate FreeAgent Go also with a 5 year warranty. I Have copied my video Database and my mp3 Database onto this drive overnight. I will be using this drive this weekend, I do have all my Videos on my laptop internal drive and have been using them from there. I am going to try using the videos from this new external, which I will be plugging into my powered Hub. Hopefully, I expect this new drive to be my gig drive, much smaller and lighter and one less power supply to use and the Maxtor powered drive will become my main backup for both Databases to be kept at home.

PS. I did remember to disable the sleep mode! :-)
