Topic: Virtual DJ 6.0.1 - initial thoughts

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I've been evaluating various versions of vdj, since v4, to see whether it can offer something to rival Traktor.

To date, I have resisted moving over, but this version may just be the one to do it.

The new VDJ script and easy mapping make midi control a breeze, and being a software developer in the past, its power is obvious.

Just one question tho.. When using template for my controller, there is obviously some internal support going on, because midi notes are mapped to 'names' as shown on my controller (this is for the VCI-100). Further more, this makes mapping any key or knob that is duplicated for each deck very easy, as you only have to do it once, and it replicates it for the other decks.

But.. if I don't want that to happen, and just want to use the raw midi notes output from the controller, to create a totally custom mapping.. can that be done ? (as per traktor). I've tried using the midi wrapper.. but when I hit the learn button, then use my controller.. nothing happens.

And... Filename support. Something has definitely happened from previous versions. On an english (UK) regional laptop, any characters not in the default character set, cause virtual DJ to fail to load the mp3. A good example is 'beyonce - crazy in love', where beyonce has an accent over the 'e'. Remove the accent and turn it into an ordinary e, and the file loads fine. Is this a known bug thats new in version 6 ?

Finally... I like the new smart play feature, but would love it if they added a feature where if smart play is enabled, and you click around in the wave form to jump the song about, it would jump to same beat in the bar (just like snap in traktor).

Just a comment on the filename support. UNICODE support was added in V6 and is supposed to take care of accents, etc. I'm using V6.0.1 and have no issues with accents (including Beyoncé).

These are done with controller definition files; some are inbuilt (for example the VCI-100) but if you create your own it will override the built in one. This maps MIDI controls - CC, Note, Pitch etc to friendly names with some preconfiguration. Same applies to HID controllers too.

There is a little problem when you drag'n'drop from Windows Explorer (Unicode conversion in this case was forgotten). It will be fixed in the next version.

This is a problem when you use windows explorer to search song because in traktor (or other softwares) it don' t work. As a VirtualDJ user I don't have to use Windows Explorer What for?? I use search functions inside VirtualDJ, works better for me. Anyway, is going to be fixed for sure.

;-)

Thats cool guys, thanks for clearing those up.

If they just implemented a snap style function... VDJ would be virtually (no pun intended) perfect.

And the last thing on my wish list, and I'm sure many others, would be an option for when you manually tap in a bpm, for it to align to the nearest peaks in the music, as its pretty much impossible to accurately tap in a bpm 100%. Its fine it you only tap it once to correct the first beat in the bar, but if you tap all 4 to get the bpm... it starts to drift.

There is an smart tap function that do this thing, but you need to type at least 40 beats to get a near accurate beat. What I do is put a somg that has the same bpm and is correctly shown in VirtualDJ, then manually put those 2 songs at the same speed and copy the bpm from the one that has it to the other. Use EDIT BPM---- COPY BPM FROM THE OTHER DECK and that's all

Hope you find it useful.

Sounds like the smart tap function you are describing is simply the software averaging the bpm presses over a longer period to get a better (more accurate) result. Thats not the same as it scanning the wave form and 'seeing' where your presses should be.

40 presses just isn't gonna work...

And.. if I knew the bpm of the track anyway, I'd just put it in the edit bpm window, rather than copy it over.

For planned sets, using an external bpm reading software is fine, but for on the fly mixing, being able to accurately correct bpm's and first beat/bar detection quickly.. is vital.
