Topic: Req: Automatic Aspect for Video Files (Letterbox vs. Crop)

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I really like how VirtualDJ 6 now allows the user to select options that will keep the aspect ratio of the videos intact. Even though this feature does have to be perfected yet, since it doesn't always get the ratio correct, it's definitely a big step in the right direction.

Next, what I would think very useful is to allow VirtualDJ to automatically specify the best mode for each video. Many videos from DVDs have the black bars in the encode, and those videos need to be cropped, whereas true fullscreen video needs to be letterboxed with black bars on the side on widescreen monitors.

I would like to suggest an "automatic" mode for aspect ratio correction that will do the following:
1. On an initial scan of the video, check a few frames to determine if there are black bars on the top of the video. If they are, set a flag in the database to use "crop" mode on that video. Otherwise default to fullscreen letterbox mode.

2. Allow the user to check this "crop" option checkbox manually in the file "information" dialogue (and also, possibly from a control on the skin - I presume this should be possible with VDJScript somehow?) This way if the automatic scanning engine gets implemented, but decides incorrectly, the user can easily override that setting and then the video will get played back correctly every time.

Agree this should some how be tied to individual video, if not automatic then a way we can manaully set the video to the setting we want.

+1 here as well

if the info cant be added to the id tag, then it could be kept in the database>>

aspect=1, 2, 3...

1, normal (or already anamprphic)
......................use to leave the video as is
2, letterbox
.....................used to stretch the screen virtically for this video, if widescreen is selected in setup
3, anaporphic mode
.....................use to shrink the video screen vertically if standard aspect is selected in setup

just an idea.

I think VDJ assumes that all the VOBs (I am only using VOBs - don't know if it works correctly with other video file type) have aspect ratios of 4:3. All my VOBs with 4:3 ratios display fine, but as soon as I open a VOB with 16:9 ratio VDJ stretches the video vertically in the video output (either window or seconday output - both are stretched).

Have you played with the "Keep Ratio" options on the video tab?

Hi SBDJ,

Yes, I definately always use one of the two "Keep ratio" options, usually crop, but that is exactly when you notice the problem, 4:3 videos are fine, but 16:9 videos are strectched vertically, that is why I say that VDJ has a bug here, because it assumes that all videos have aspect ratios of 4:3.
